Who wants to play as Alyx in an expansion?

Yes or No? Someone on this forum said it best. I want to play as someone i haven't already attributed a personality to. I personally want to play as an Op4, someone from the otherside of the equation.

personally i don't think there is as much scope for expansion of hl2's characters as there was for hl. Not sure why, maybe its because hl2 is so much more centered around Gordon Freeman and his mission, whereas hl everyone was part of this catastrophe and were all in the same boat.
I dunno, im just not as excited about expansions for this as i was with the first

I'd rather play a new character, HL is about immersion using characters that don't talk, like Gordon Freeman. But we have seen what Alyx's character is, and I don't really want to play the game to fit her character.
Maybe Dog would be ok, because it's a machine.
Blueshift wasn't such a good experience because I half expected Barney Calhoun to shout his comments, and I had to be the dozy security guard.
Anyway that's just my opinion.

Whatever they choose to do I have faith that I'll enjoy it. The Half-Life Universe is Valve's baby and they aren't going to do anything to (consciously) screw it up.

I pretty much agree with kirovman. Alyx is one of the main characters in HL2. She's been given a lot of personality by Valve. With Gordon, we had to find out who he is, but Alyx, well, we already know a hell of a lot about her, no point in an expansion.

And when would this expansion take place? Before Gordon arrives in C17? Or...

If Valve do make an Alyx expansion, I'd rather prefer the second one ^ . At least the HL2 story would continue.


As for Dog... well... I've never played a game where the main guy's a machine before! It wouldn't be too challenging though. You're bulletproof, and you can crush anything in your way with cars and vans. It would get boring after a while.

I think only the former is likely though. I like it this way, also, from a product selling POV, and Alyx Backstory has one particuarlly important item that other characters wouldn't be able to get without some convulutions in their stories: Eli's Gravity Gun.

I'd be happy with an Alyx expansion, but personnally I'd be most interested in a proper Opposing Force 2: not a Shepherd led Opposing Force, but one from a Combine perspective.

Depends, if they do it right, but it will still be funny since Alyx already has a personality. But then again, so did Barney (sort of) when you played him in BS.

But a game where you play two chars (Alyx/Dog) is a no-no in my book. If they're planning to do what I think they are, where you play an Alyx part and a Dog part. Switching between characters sucks.

Yeah... details on this expansion are scarce at the moment, and it's not clear whether they mean "An expansion where you play as Alyx, but are followed around by Dog" or "An expansion where you play both Alyx and Dog"...

No, it would go against everything Valve have worked towards storywise. They (or Gearbox) even went out of their way to ensure the Barney in BS was the only one that couldn't possibly talk to you and survived.

He's referring to the article in this thread: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=66224 . It's translated into English a few pages into the thread, but there isn't a release date associated with it. I think it all depends on Valve's plans for publishing it: they may consider making the pack in episodes via steam, in which case it may only be a matter of months until we can play the first chapter. Otherwise, a year to a year and a half sounds a reasonable bet (Opposing Force took exactly one year).

Both would be uber-cool . But if Alyx decides to make out with Gordon during that expansion, then I guess i will play until that point. Pfff, AS IF Alyx would make out with him, hes not 'interesting and talkative' enough etc etc. Womens basic demands.... understandable lol.

In the first game we had Shepard, an army guy that you didn't really know. He was just one of many so it was a perfect inclusion. And also barney which we knew of but didn't know, he isn't a "real" character

I want to play as either Shepard, he was left in statis and could play out a number of different situations, not neccessarily on earth. Or another interesting but relatively unknown character. All the main characters are too painted to be played. And resistance soldiers would be disappointingly boring. Possibly a Combine soldier who goes from an ordinary citizen to an elite... there is some potential there.

That is asuming Alyx survived somehow,or the Gman spared her,I think it would be pretty cool if you continued on, possibly searching for Gordan or something along those lines.

I am not sure if I would enjoy playing Alyx if all she did was simply fill in the blanks when she was not with Gordan in HL2.Although having said that at least we would know more of the story.

As long as it has variety and it flows,it will be good.

IMHO, making an expansion pack with Alyx and DOG is by far the best option Valve has now. I felt they both played a marginal role in HL2, especially DOG: when I saw the screenshots in the game mags I expected it to move flawlessly, but it has exceeded my expectations - definitely. One of the very few things that made me think "I can't believe my comp is able to do this".

Hopefully we'll know more about it by the next E3.

No, not particularly. Turning a fleshed-out and vocal character into an empty shell for my emotions doesn't sound cool to me. Freeman and Shepard were not characters that had been previously established for you, and I'd like to see either the return of Shepard or a completely new character.

Besides, Alyx, as kickass as she was, was not a one-man army. She could die. She did not carry around a huge bag of weapons. She was not a slaughter-machine. If she's to become the main character of the expansion, then you know that's what she'd turn into. It would just strike me the wrong way.

In any case, I refuse to believe that this idea has been confirmed until the expansion is officially confirmed.

Do they really think we can relate to Alyx???
It might work for games like heavy metal fakk2 and tomb raider where you get to play in 3rd person and look at the ass the whole time. but for a fps game it will be dumb.
