The water was actually a living being that tried to get out of the freezer, unfortunately it wasn't fast enough.

He probably froze it, then put water in it, turned it upside down, then the dripping water made a spike, or there was water leaking on it when it was freezing/frozen, and made a bump then a bigger bump, then a spike.
