I tend to reformat my hard drive fairly regulary , so when it comes to

reinstalling HL2 i can`t play the game until steam is updated .

This is a pain in the butt as i only have a dial up connection .

It takes about 2 to 2 and half hours to do this .

I have tried saving the complete Valve folder before reformatting then

reinstalling it (thinking the previously updated steam folder wouldn`t

need updating) .

But that didn`t work either .

Why the hell you have to go online before being able to play a single

player game has me beat .

I really hope this is not the way gaming is going .

Any advise would be appreciated .

Well, for one, you don't need to go searching for updates/patches across the internet, they just get automatically downloaded for you :p It indeed does suck when you have 56K, but it still does the trick. Just let it update and turn off auto-updating for any other game:

Left-click on the Steam tray icon.
Select "Games".
Click on the "My Games" tab.
Right-click on the game that you want to shut down auto-updating.
Select "Properties".
Click on the "Updates" tab.
Select "Do not automatically update this game." from the drop-down box.
Click "OK".
Click "Close".

Can't you back it up to a Portable Hard Drive or a DVD before you reformat?

You don't want to just save the valve folder, you need to go into steam, "File - Backup games". Use that, and the version you burn will be up to date when you install it.
