Hey all i just got the game today yay :) and i was just wondering why you need steam to play single player why couldnt they of just made hl2 deathmatch stand alone from hl2 so u only need steam for hl2 deathamtch and steam is taking ages to update so is there anyway to be able to play hl2 offline thnx in advance. i raly wanna kick some alian butt :) :sniper: :borg:.

Yes you can play online. Just logon into steam, let it load up all the updates, disconect your internet connection from your comp, and start playing. Gave me a decent improvement (I think) in performance.

But you need steam to play either way. Valve is really cracking down on piracy. Something like each time you log on, it makes sure you've got something to make sure you're not playing HL2 pirated.

If you read steampowered you'd know that the game keeps connecting to STEAM even in singleplay.

Hasn't been fixed yet.

My solution would be to block that Steam pile of junk with the firewall. Either do that or de-Steam your game, although the latter might be a bit of a hassle. Just block Steam and it will work in offline mode properly, and deblock it for whenever an update comes out or you want to play CSS.

Honestly, there might be something right about Steam, but forcing it on everyone... gah.

Don't be so rude Mountain Man, it was the guy's first ever post and it's a genuine question to someone who might not have spent 18 months registered here and accumulated 2060 posts :p

As for Steam, there's nothing that can be done about it. The reason it's updating right now is because there have been lots of updates released. Check which games are being updated.

Right click on the Steam icon on your system tray (near the clock) > Click on Monitor > See which games are updating.

My bet is that it's more than just Half-Life 2 updating so right click any of the other games that are updating (Like CS:Source and HL2DM) and click on Properties > From here select from the drop down list "Do not automatically update this game" and then restart Steam.

This might speed the process up a bit for you :)
