Yeah, technical limitations. Although I expect to see it(along with visible ladder etc. arms) either in Episode 3 or (most likely) whatever game comes after it, since said limitations have been overcome since 2004.

Nah they should keep it the way it is. I get kind of annoyed when I actually see a person's arms steering a car awkwardly or climbing a ladder in an FPS. Especially since they've never done it yet, so I see no reason why they should start now. It's one of the more subtle trademarks the HL series has.

How would seeing Gordon's hands while climbing or driving be any more immersion-breaking than seeing his hands while holding a gun?

If anything having him magically float up a ladder or telekinetically turn a car's steering wheel in 2009(or whatever year Ep. 3's coming out) is way more immersion-breaking IMO.
