We don't want to impose a voice on the player. It's also the reason you never
see yourself.

Hello Mr Newell ,

First of all, I would like to say that you and all your team have made a amazing
job for Half-Life and Half-Life 2, Belgium support you at 100%.

I'm a Half-Life fan since his begining, i would like to ask you only one
question, I know that you are a very buzy man and if you don't answer it, I
understand.

I don't know if someone ask it to you before but here is the question :

In Half-Life and Half-Life 2 everybody are talking "G-man, Scientist, Barney,
Alyx, Marines, etc..." but the only guys who don't talk is Gorden Freeman, could
you tell me why Freeman say nothing ?
He's the only guys who say norhing !!!

If you could put this in the Valve information thread as well, we'd appreciate it.

I think hearing 'yourself' speak would just take you out of the role of actually being gordon freeman.

I was amazed in the vids how gordon get blinded by a flash photo, goes deaf when too near an explosion and is pushed back when shoved by a combine. It all shows how much gordon is a real person in the game.

correct me if im wrong, but i think gordon talks at the part is the test chamber when he ask the scientists "what's he doing in there?".

This is what they said about it in HL1 too. Apparently, you wont even see your own reflection in mirrors or something (maybe it'll be blurred out? Be weird if you just didn't show up, like a vampire!)

Don't remember Gordon saying anything in that sequence or anywhere else.

you really had to mention you are belgian? now he thinks we cant speak decent english in belgium :(

Errr, who would he be askeing that? What's who doing in where?

No, it's one of the scientists watching you from above. Can't you tell by the voice? It sounds like it's going through a PA.

Gordon doesn't talk. You are Gordon. If you want to talk to yourself while playing the game, you are wierd. ;)

What test chamber? The one in HL? The mega huge one? I've never heard Gordon talk.

And to the topic: Heard it...somewhere...I think it was 'Valve only' sticky, last page.

Hasn't this been known for some time (like before HL2 was even announced)?

(not trying to be mean.)

Um, actually, no, he doesn't.... I don't actually remember that happening, and I played it like 2 days ago (from start to finish :E)

Yeah it's been known for a long while.

It's an absolutely great concept. Games like Duke Nukem and Far Cry are all very well, they are quite fun, but they'd be even better if they were as immersive as HL was and the character didn't speak and there wasn't any cut scenes.

I love the Half-Life experience because it makes me feel like I'm Gordon.

I think there was a mod (asure sheep?) where gordon had a really stong german or austrian accent.....

yeah its one of the thigns gabe says hes surprised noone else has copied. just like scripted events taking place ingame instead of thru cutscenes. its such an awesome concept. and the seamless levels without boundaries. makes it really immersive.

u always see things from the same perspective. even when ur dragged after being captured in apprehension, u see gordons eye views, that makes it so awesome.

I don't understand how being able to see yourself would be an immersion breaker. I mean you are in a hazard suit right?

And it's not like you don't see Gordon's hands in first person, so it's puzzling that they didn't show Gordon operating the hovercraft (with his hands at least). I mean which is the greater immersion breaker, seeing your supposedly in-game hand turn a 'steering mechanism' or having said steering mechanism magically turn by itself as if influenced by telekinetic forces?

/rant

I hated tommy talk in GTA: VC. I'm glad gordon keeps his mouth shut.

re: subtle
Because suddenly you're controlling a character (visible in front of you) instead of seeing your own arms.

Even worse is cutscenes where suddenly you're not even in control. You're watching a movie instead of beind immersed.

But your arms are the hazard suit, I suppose there would be problem at the beggining of the game when Gordon is in normal clothing though.

But that doesn't stop them showing Gordons arms when operating the various vehicles. I want to become immersed in the game, to feel like I really am hurtling through a dried up river bed at 70 kmh with attack helicopters on my tail. Everything else conspires to achieve that affect, it's just the way the handle bars seem to turn mysteriously that spoils things (at least for me). But I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

That event in the test chamber was caused when u stepped in the beam before shunting the carrier, its meant to be one of the scientists, the voice actor did other sounds to (in the pak file) but they wernt used, and considering how out of place he sounds im not surprised lol.

As for the vehicles you would need the model to change when you got inside, and precaching 2 models of that size would be a waste of resources, you could have the hands floating in the first person but as soon as u jerked it would screw up, or at least that was the problem with having hand models touch the world in HL1.

If the hands were part of the hovercraft itself though then it would have been alright. Just isn't practical for modding purposes.

so how do they do it with other games? sure a bit of IK would do it? or perhaps creating a "weapon" of the wheel. It cant be that hard :)

The Tommy talk in Vice was done well, IMO I think it worked great.

Maybe because it's in third-person, you've already lost that aspect of immersion, and so having him talk doesn't really change much.

Also, having great voice talent ( Ray Liotta ), made the cutscenes much better.

OT Sorry

That's the one! Probably the funniest HL scene I've ever played.

In the mod, you play Barney, and I fell through the ceiling and found myself in the first assassin area from the original HL. Then up from an elevator comes none other than Gordon himself, and says (in a thick german accent) 'Heeeyy, whaaats thaaat smeeel?' 'Heeeere I aaam' etc, etc, and procedes to blast the assassins for you.

HL bliss. I was in stitches.

it's because he's invisible, exceptfor his arms, and he has a speech impedement :D
