Why is email so shit?

Gah, I've just spent an hour uploading a batch of photographs in hotmail at what must have been 1kb/s only to receive a delivery notification five minutes later saying that it's too big for the recipients inbox. It's only 19 bloody megabites ffs!

Same story with my gmail account. WTF is the point of having gigabytes of space if they don't let you receive emails larger than 10mb? Are they expecting you to keep every email you ever get including the spam.

RRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! There's got to be a better way of doing this. Help!

I'd guess because most other email clients won't accept attachments that large.

Because the protocol was developed in the early 80s when the average hard drive was 8MBs.
