Why is it not optional to tell steam what you want and don't want?

i REALLY REALLY hate steam, more than gamespy even.

For one, why not have options to pick what you want and don't want it to d/l? (besides updates). That makes no sense. I do not like a piece of software to d/l things when i'm playing a game or something else.

Also, being on 56k i wonder if HL2 is going to even work decently?

I know Steam says it requires broadband, but why would valve cut out half of the online players from CS/HL/DOD ?

Yes, i know many of you are thinking "get broadband!", well i would GLADLY get it if i could, but it's not available in my areas, and not available in a lot more areas either.

It's a fact that 56k'ers still outnumber broadbanders.
espically in other countries where broadband cost about the same as a T3 here.

I guess i really don't see a need for a piece of software like steam, i would glady take a in game browser to simply set and play multiplayer games and leave the d/ling new mods and patches up to websites and mirrors.

Steam doesnt require broadband it just recommends it. But Steam + 56k = disaster. Hopefully they might optimize the client a bit more for 56k users rather than just ignoring them.

you do have options to pick what you want and dont want, you can go into properties for each game and set them all to do not update if you so choose, you can also go into properties and tell it to delete teh cache of that game so its not taking up HD space.

I didn't mean "updates"
i mean not downloading ANYTHING unless you want it.
IE CS, etc etc.

yes, if you use the old installer it starts with no game cache, the new installer includes CS, but you can probably still find the old installer to use, and it comes with no cache, and then you can set CS to not update, and voila, no more CS.
