Why is my system not capable of playing HL 2?

I consider myself fairly knowlegeable when it comes to PCs, however, my laptop has been giving me issues when I try to play HL 2. Here are my specs (let me know if you need more info):

~I have an AMD Turion 64 2.0 GHz Processor
*EDIT* ~A GeForce Go 6100 video card with 128mb of RAM
~1Gb of DDR RAM

When I installed HL last night I got it up and running but when I started the game everything was very choppy, both the video and the audio (and this is just talking about the initial cutscene). I fiddled around with a few of the video settings and eventually turned the resolution down to 640x480, and set all the graphics options to low detail. This made the game manageable... but come on, I want to play HL 2 for the amazing graphics, I didn't buy the game so that I can play something that looks like the graphics from the first game.

My system should be able to handle HL 2 while running with a high resolution and high detail. Any idea what is going on? One side note, I am running on a wireless connection that has been finicky of late, however, I don't see why that should matter if I am playing solo.

ive never heard of the 1600 go graphics card. sure you didnt mean 6100? also dont expect to play at high end graphics on a cheap laptop.

Perhaps you shouldn't, after that post...

No. No it shouldn't. Not by a LONG shot. Play it - kind of. High detail and resolution? Not a hope in hell. A person "knowledgeable about PC's" should see that immediately...

HL2 is surprisingly easy on hardware requirements for the level of graphics it produces, but it won't work miracles.
