in the USA, why is it that a black guy can call another black guy a n****r and it's fine, but yet when a white guy does it it's like all wrong and stuff? Then, when a black guy calls a white guy a honkey or something derogatory it's shrugged off? I've been wondering this strange behaviour for YEARS... anyone have any ideas?

just let it go, nothing good will come of this thread, it'll be locked by page 2

christ use google fool
it's because ****** is derogatory and is racism if it is used by a white person unless with a friend (who is black)
in the same you wouldnt say ****** or whore unless it was derogatory or in jest with a friend (who is male or female respectively)
thats not a double standard - thats simply common sense

and listen to stern - i only hope you have the maturity to work it out for yourself rather than rant blindly about it
i'm tempted to request this thread be locked right now

Yes it is bs. In my school black dudes say it and the teachers hear it no problem..if a white person says it they get in trouble and suspended for racial intolerance.

it would make sense if there was one standard, actually... it's like saying for some people, green is meant for go but for others it's red or yellow... pretty confusing

Congrats, you are the 123095725372nd white person to bring this up.

If my memory serves me right, blacks were the victims of slavery and poor treatment for the past 300 years, not whites. Get over it.

it's because black people have re-appropriated a hateful word and made it their own ..that way they take away some of the power of that word. Dont you people have something better to discuss?

that is the real reason ..thread lockage in 3 ...2 ... 1

Not to mention when white people say it...there's oh...I dunno...hundreds of years of opression behind the word.

Like CptStern said black people turn it around for their own uses to take away from the original use of the word.

I've never owned a slave.. my grandparents never did.. and my great grandparents never did... i really don't have to "get over" anything.. in fact, i've asked several of my black friends about this same question, and most of them are either pissed because other blacks use it or just think its a stupid thing to say at all, even richard pryor quit saying it all together

What a ridiculous post. Today's white people don't own slaves, and blacks today have just as much rights as the white man does.

It's not about rights.

why is only americans who complain about this and why is it only americans who say today's global warming is natural
seriously there are places for this conversation and its not here
so leave it please

Debates about racism are bound to end up in a flame fest.

Yeah, blacks have equal rights, obviously that's not the problem or we wouldn't have this double-standard in the first place.

It's not that hard to understand. The rap culture took a painful, raw, hard word, and derived it of its power- the "N" word became a term of endearment amongst people of color. Of course, when a white person calls a black person that, it's percieved as racist, because... yeah. When a white person says "n****r", it takes its old meaning as a horrible slur, whereas when a black person says "n***a" it's a term of endearment.

Why does a topic of double standards instantly talk about black people?

Racists...

I think it matters because it is their word now. It was originally intended as an insult from, yes, white people and then they took it as their own. It probably still has unpleasant connotations if said by a white person. Like it's a bad memory for them.

Or, as another double standard, why don't white people get annoyed if referred to as a "honky" like "******" does for a black person? Hell, I laugh everytime I hear it, and my friends (whom are mostly white) use it on occasion. Maybe white people should rise up and get angry about it...

edit: Oh and Glirk, I just went through Firefly again, which your sig reminded me of. Good stuff.

Something is only truly offensive if it is meant to be.

So if i called you a Carrotsnapping Potato Licker, you would take offense to that?

Look guys, this is just a stupid and crappy thread ready for me to urinate on and get closed. The initial question is just stupid.
*urinates*
The quick Brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. I also like it when my neck hurts.

the original question was not stupid, and it's something that, while often brought up, has never truly been addressed or resolved

I like how so many of you saw fit to just shit on this thread in hopes it would get closed, gj

Basically, you should be able to say whatever the hell you want in a public school, as long as it doesn't disrupt a classroom. Rules about 'harassment' are ridiculous.
