widescreen gaming woes

Someone please tell me why battlefield 2 doesn't support widescreen? Currently it's just stretching the 4:3 image to fill up the corners of my widescreen monitor, and as a result, the game looks uglier than it should.

AFAIK, Dice is going to add widescreen resolutions in a patch. Is there any way to set your monitor to not scale-up 4:3 images to fit the screen? Try reading the manual (I don't mean that in a "RTFM n00b" kind of way. Every monitor is different, and I don't know any catch-all solutions offhand).

they have a master list of fixes for games that dont support widescreen
