Widescreen Support

Anyone know or could someone find out (on one of the MANY visits to Valve in Seattle that people are doing) if WIDESCREEN is supported in HL2. Especially since those latest screenies are in wide format.

Thanks boys....

Up until now, all media have been in widescreen form, so it's a very very safe bet to say that widescreen is supported. The main question is - is normal 4:3 or 5:4 supported? Since all media are in widescreen format they have a very cinematic feel. Maybe VALVe just want us to experience HL2 in this cinematic way, so they only offer a widescreen option?

it will just be the same as steam games where you go to options and can change resolution and toggle widescreen format

HL2 has widescreen support as well as standard 4:3

apparently its even animorphic !... not that i have a clue what that is but i know its important for widescreen lol

Just out of interest, has anyone here actually got a widescreen ?

i have a widescreen tv, i could try putting that on my desk :p

but i want to have somewhere for my computer to go so i wont try that just yet

it in interview

lol, yup i've got the same problem...

you can buy special widescreen flat panel moniters but they cost over £600 so its a bit of of a waste

hopefully you'll be able to run widescreen on a 4:3 monitor and just have top and bottom black bars.

Remember back in the day when people thought that Half-Life 2 would be widescreen only?

ha.

So yeah, Half-Life 2 definately supports Widescreen.

its more than just "CINEMATIC FEEL" people...you see more of the sides of the actual game.

oh and yes i might get a wide-screen monitor. they kick total ass. i hate 4x3 these days.

forexample..tell me this doesn't look sweet

It would look sweeter if Far Cry supported wide screen, which it doesn't in that picture. You can tell because everything looks squished. The radar isn't circular, it's a squished oval.

it does support widescreen....and it looks sweet

i had a page showing how it specifically supported it. lemme find it for you....

it compared a regular monitor and widescreen with FC. the widescreen had extra side view..you could see extra stuff..not just squished.

of course far cry supports widescreen
at work we have 20" apple cinema display that is widescreen and we ran far cry on it a lot and it looks sweet. Most games will work on widescreen, it's just the matter of resolution - but it will actually give you extra information on the side, so it's not just a fancy - it is objectivly better gaming experience

I thought a crt monitor is the best thing to have for games otherwise i would buy a wide screen.

Not anymore. With the response rate dropping quicker than a girls dress on Prom night, the LCD presents a very pretty package now, with some head spinning resolutions and the awesome new video cards to run them. Ghosting is disappearing thanks to the lastest tech.

LOL....I c, say for my rig what would be a good widescreen for around 1000 and under?

rooflez. there is no widescreen lcd under 1000. they are all like 1200-2000. i for one want the one in that pictures. its a 23" hp, with 16m/s. extraordinary for gaming.

I have a widescreen. It is a 15.4" Dell laptop. Games available in widescreen format look outstanding. It's great that Half-Life 2 supports widescreen, it sure gives a nice feel to games.

yeah that is a nice monitor subz i went today to check them out however i must say that the apple cinema one the 23 " one looks a little better than the hp but the hp i looked at was the same model as the L2335 except it was the little more expensive one that has the speakers on the side, I think i may buy one of them just cant decide which but I like the apple a little more pictue is a little better and brighter.

Just got my 23" apple cinema desplay (The new model) with 16ms, hd ready widescreen lcd, with 1920x1200 let me tell you guys that playing farcry at this res as well as others like ut2k4 and call of duty wow even dod and cs look amazingly different anyone that says that crts are better for gaming than lcd's now obviously havnt seen this monster... its like a whole new experience... I took some pics of the monitor and HL2 binks on it, and i would post them but im not sure how?

O and subz and whoever else said that widescreen give it a more cinematic feel was totaly right give games quite a bit extra mmph..!

Forget the LCD. I'll take my widescreen projector over that any day.

I hope 1280x768 is supported! Only game so far that has worked is Far Cry.

I bet your widescreen wont do 1920x1200 res and I bet pcgaming doesnt look as nice either. I did alot fo research on this gone to best buy, circuit city, ultimate electronics which has the nicest monitors and are the most knowledgable they said for gaming ona pc you wan the apple or the HP no projector or plasma will look as good maybe counsels will look good but not for pcs we even hooked up a pc with a 9800 pro on a projection widescreen and it didnt even compare to the apple cinema display lcd.

I bet my computer won't do 1920X1200 res in the first place. :p
The point is the 84" diagnol instead of 21". :) (Well, that and a bit of bragging might be the other point.)

Really big is a whole different version of immersive.

Human eyes have a high horizontal field of view, watching something in widescreen allows you to see and absorb more than regular 4:3.

Did doom3 support WIDESCREEN ?

Yes and is much brighter not neccesarily taking the darkness away from the game but i guess just making it better looking more alive.

Blah... to each his own I guess I compared a bunch of plasmas, hd's, wodescreen's, etc. and when it came down how a pc game ran and looked ill take the apple anyday now movies is a different story from comparing not too say movies dont look great on mine just not as good and "BIG" as others highly priced tv's for obvious reasons.
