A few days ago in the official Doom 3 Trailer thread, I mentioned that I thought the game was unknown (let me explain :P!) and was met by many responses, (most questioning my mental health.) What I think is that the game is massively hyped in the game community, but still unknown to very casual gamers (especially to casual console gamers, no offense.) What I'm wondering is how hyped/known you guys think the game is, from your experience. I have heard reports of 180 copies selling out in under an 1/4 of a day, so it might be a little more hyped than I thought :P My guess is that the first mass of sales will be to the fanboys/very active gamers, then the word will spread, and the second chunk of sales will be to more casual gamers who hear about it.

Pretty widely, I'd say.

X-Box fanboys are raving about how their version is going to be "so much better" than the PC version, and are being told to shut up by PC gamers. Since Doom 3 is considered a next-gen game, naturally, everybody is going to be hyped ..... well, except for parents, and anti-gamers ......

I'll admit, there hasnt been as much media released as say hl2 (last two e3's) so its not all that crazy that the casual gamers might not know about it, but cmon man its DOOM!! (3)

That's one of the things that I think will help push sales after initial release. The first Doom (and the sequels, to an extent) were so influential and groundbreaking, that I think many gamers will see it on the shelves, and buy it on the spot, just from the nostalgic memories of the old Doom games. Even if they haven't bought a game in years, they will remember Doom :)

Frosty.. i think part of the Doom3 hype also depends on ur age as well.. as sad as that may sound :|
for me.. i was a bit young back in the days of Doom 1 and 2 and Wolfinstien3D but was still able to get my hands on it along with a few of my buddies.

younger pple probably don't know much about the Doom series and how the fps genre became what it is today... mainly due to age.

hopefully over recent years the word on JDoom has spread enough to fix some of that.. but don't be surprised if Doom3 is something pple don't know about.

I agree. The age of Doom 3 players will most likely be higher than average, but I don't really see this as a bad thing. Despite the fact that Doom is old, it is still relatively well known to younger gamers. I think the younger audience will become interested a week or two after release, when the hype spreads like wildfire :)

My friends (my casual gamer friends) got interested at the instant the heard the name "Doom" :)

I wish I could talk more of my friends into buying the PC version, but I think a good number of them are going to buy the Xbox version. I wouldn't be surprised if hype didn't reach critical mass until the Xbox version was on the horizon :(

But we can hope

Holy crap this is the Doom series we are talking about. The Doom series are legendary in the gaming industry. How can you call yourself a gamer and not know what Doom is???

Unfortunately, Doom series , or infact any game from the FPS genre isn't that famous in mainstream media or the general public - like even the most unknowlegeable person about games would know a cash cow game like Need for speed or GTA, but wouldn't actully know about something like D3. However, almost every pro gamer, should know about it.

I have stupid friends, they know HL2 and Doom 3 but they're not excited about them. Hah haha, fools! They wouldn't last ten seconds on Mars!

neither would you

*watches Seppo slowly freeze (after the pressure pumped all air out of his body) on the surface of mars in his black "HL² and DOOM³ = pwn" t-shirt*

That's probably because they are intrested in a mainstream game like some new NFS, or GTA: SA.

Yeah, it may be that. Although they're more into PC technology or something, whereas I'm only interested in playing games. So they're like excited everytime a new video card is announced, and I have no clue what's so special about it. And I think it's a bit geeky, although I'm the one who plays games all the time :)

I tihnk a lot fo this hype is because the game is finaly coming out, rather than it being anything significant. The fact that its Doom probably has something to do with it, but Doom isn't perhaps the legend some people make it out to be. Yeah ok it helped kick off the FPS genre but it wasn't really that good a game. I prefered Wolfenstien and Duke Nukem 3D even.

Yeah well, the Sex Pistols helped kick off (or as some may prefer it, myself included, curse the world) with punk, but they were shit. They couldn't play or write songs, and they were stupid apes. Woah, worst metaphor ever.

yeah anyway I think the hype is because the engine is a huge advance in technology. And it's a new id software game. And when the game was shown for the first time, the ingame graphics were better than most of the cutscene videos of the current games.
