Full story.

Day Zero was to be Oct. 7, the day Dad left for Army basic training in Fort Jackson, S.C. He was moving 950 miles from their home in Watertown, 950 miles from Mom.

He was leaving, even though Mom was sick with ovarian cancer. Even though he had been at her side through two long, miserable rounds of chemotherapy. Even though she now faced the likelihood of a third.

In fact, Dad was leaving because Mom was sick.

...

Dad's solution: a four-year hitch in the Army.

...

Mom was working part time at a Culver's restaurant, preparing for more chemo, worrying about how to pay the bills. In less than six weeks, Dad would enter the Army and her care would be covered.

The tradeoff was that he would be far away when Mom needed him home, when Chelsea needed him, too. He would miss all of her high school years. The band performances. Prom

Pretty hardcore. Hope he stays safe and that his wife gets better. What a terrible situation to be in.

Sadly real life is alot of tough decisions and risks. That man is brave

A truly selfless man, hope he's able to get his wife the care she needs and that he comes home safely.

With health care being as expensive as it is right now, I think if I ever developed cancer or any serious illness, I would kill myself on the spot.

9 months from now, congress passes the healthcare reform bill including a public option... this guy: ffffffuuuuuuuu------

Quitter. If you register for experimental treatments it's often lower cost or free and there is some pretty cool stuff being tested right now. As to dying from said treatment...well a lot of people die of cancer anyway and I'd prefer to take the risk on some crazy bet than chemo that usually does more harm than good.

I don't get why he didn't just start cooking meth to fund her treatments, it's easy. Seriously tho, mad respect for this guy.

Yeah, or he is killed in action, his wife dies from Cancer, and his kids are left with no parents.

But honestly, I'd have done the same thing. Hope everything works out for him.

Is it horrible that the first thing I thought was "Hot damn this would make a great movie. Oscar nomination here I come"

The dad would go to his daughter's prom? WTF.

Not sure if you're joking, but the article meant seeing her before she goes to prom. Seeing his daughter looking prettier than she ever has before, etc.

If that's a big moment for him he must lead a pretty empty life.
