Yes, the Wii is already ready for a redesign according to a rumour flapping around the internet. As seems to be the fashion these days, the Wii is already set to be made more streamlined about a year after its initial release. The streamlined version will include DVD playback.

So, as this is a relatively boring piece of news, what do all you guys think about the redesigning of consoles, thereby inviting people to spend even more money. I just dread the redesign of the PS3.

It's probably just the Japan-only Wii version of the Panasonic Q (snazzy GameCube with DVD/CD/MP3 playback).

I will buy a Wii no matter what. I love the control scheme and Super smash brothers with online capability will be more addicting than any game in history. It's a must get.

Interesting, but irrelevant to me. I have two DVD players and an Xbox 360, so another DVD drive would be overkill.

[edit] lol, Wiidesign. That was pretty good.

One of the things I hate about Nintendo is how they constantly double dip. Every version of the Gameboy has had at least 2 iterations that just fixes basic design flaws from the original. If you remember the Wii was originally supposed to have DVD playback, then they announced that it wouldn't all of a sudden. Wonder why?

I never thought they announced it had DVD playback. The main reason it didn't was a easy way to cut down on costs and everybody has one. So why include something that really isn't needed?

I bet this rumor is simply started by a person saying they're gonna do the same thing to the Wii that they do with handhelds. Another thing I'd point out is that Nintendo re-releases handhelds all the time, but never their consoles. We don't see Gamecube Lites on sale.

Who ACTUALLY cares about dvd playback? I have 3 other players in my apartment right now. I don't need another one.

Well considering I may not get one for a year or two due to the whole college thing, it is actually sort of cool for me.

Considering that even though I may have a DVD player there at college, the fact that I could then get rid of it and have one game console and dvd player would be so nice.

Again though, that's not the general consesus cause a lot of people already have tons :P

When did they announce it wouldn't have DVD playback?

It'd suck if they release a re-design after a year or two. I don't really like it when they do that with their handhelds.

But I doubt they will re-design it... though they may add DVD playback. I don't see why it's not in there now. They've got a DVD drive in there... why not just include some cheap software to play dvd's.
Not that I care, Got too many DVD players now :P Don't want anymore.

Well the way I see it...pretty much any handheld has room for basic functionality improvement, battery life, screen, size, etc. A remade console doesn't exactly have these options.

A new version of the Wii couldn't get any hardware changes without changing the way games run on all Wii's. Controllers are wireless, the system has built in wireless, there's no size or screen issue to deal with, it's all there. The ONLY possible thing I can think of is larger internal memory. Even that's not worth buying a new Wii for because you could simply invest in getting a bigger SD card and your stuff could easily be portable (assuming the SD card can be used for saves).

I like consoles to be redesigned. The PS1 looked cool, so did the slimline PS2. I think it works well, gets more people buying the consoles, more people to play with.

From whjat i've read the wii was never meant to have dvd playback - it goes against Nintendo's 'games console without all the extra fluff people don't want/need' attitude.

Yeah they say that and then go and put a bunch of useless multimedia functions on the Wii as well as an internet browser that you have to pay for.

The reason Nintendo doesn't put all these extra features in is because they can pump out the consoles cheaper (while stuff like photo mode doesn't really affect the bottom line). I would have no problem with this, except that I don't feel the consumer is seeing the benefits cost-wise.

Which useless multimedia functions? I think the direction Nintendo are going with their online service is quite exciting.

The browser is free if you d/l it before like next June or something.

I actually kinda like the media functions. The fact that I could just chuck a TV episode on my SD card and throw it into the Wii and watch it is kind of nice. Also, whenever one of my friends comes over he shows me his photos from the weekend or whatever he has...and it'll be nice to flip through them on the Wii rather than pass his little camera back and forth.
