will 64bit (dualcore) decrease render time?

When rendering large scenes with mental ray +final gatherer it takes alot of time. I currently have 32bit windows XP so only 1 core (3ghz) is working. If i install 64bit Xp and activate my second core (total 6ghz) about how much difference will it be? I cant find any benchmarks or other information about it so this is my last resort. I dont want to install 64 bit and have it do nothing different. Im using 3ds max 2009 btw.

Anyone have any experiance to share?

I'm not familiar with 3dmax but it would depent if the version you have is a 32bit program or if it can actually do 64bit.

Assuming the programs are optimized and take advantage of their platform
Meh = 32bit app running on a 64bit OS
Great = 64bit app running on a 64bit OS

Doesn't look like 3DS Max 9 runs too well in 64bit. They probably have not coded for it, at least for windows.

FYI, you don't double MHz/GHz when switching to 64bit.
It would be a '3GHz dual core chip running XP 64bit'.

And uh, Windows XP works just fine with dual-core systems. Why would you disable one core?
hehe that's funny. Didn't see him mention 1 core last time I read it.

@Ravioli
If you have a dual core CPU both cores are available to do work. Although you may not see a load on the second core because the program doesn't know how to send to two. Running a another program and multitasking would put load on it.
32bit vs 64bit just refers to the size of the instructions a CPU can handle.

Two things.

1) Dual Cores work just fine in XP 32-bit.

2) You cannot just add the clock speed of the two cores together to get a "thereotical" speed.

woha! I certainly learned a thing or two from this! That pretty much answered all of my wonders. Thanks guys!
