I have a:

Athlon XP 1800+
1GB PC2700 DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 200 SE 128MB

I can play Doom 3 reasonably well.

Any info would be great, thanks.

Umm, I think you would probably be able to run HL2 with minimal effects enabled (Low settings), the main bottleneck being your graphics card, "ATI Radeon 200 SE 128MB". You should look into possibly upgrading your card to truly experience all of the eyecandy HL2 has to offer.

thanks for replying. If I upgrade to a Radeon 9600Pro 128 DDR would that be enough? I'd hate to have to replace my mobo and cpu.

Might do, Might not. Depends on whether or not you fall fail to the stutter bug or not;

From what I have read, everyone is suseptible to this bug.

But, would simply upgrading the video card be enough or do i need to upgrade the cpu (and mobo)?

If you can't tell, I'm looking at a fairly cheap upgrade.

It's unlikely that upgrading the system has any effect on the problem. Indeed, Many people with very high end systems are experiencing this problem. It seems to be really hit & miss & it's baffling why some experience it & others don't.

Take a look at how HL2 is running for some people;
http://home.broadpark.no/~krhagen/.

This was being played on the following system;
Asus P4C800-E w/ 1016 BIOS
Intel Pentium 4 3.0C
1 GB PC-3200 DDR SDRAM
ATI RADEON X800 XT PE AGP w/ 4.12 beta CATALYST drivers
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum eX w/ latest drivers
Western Digital 7200 RPM WD-2000JD 200GB HD
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2

That's a good read. But which is the better (as in min. req to play HL2) upgrade:

(1) ATI Radeon 9600PRO 128MB
OR
(2) AMD XP 2200+
OR
(3) AMD Semptron 2400+

In other words, I'm not sure if the video card or the processor is my primary bottle neck.

Anyone else running this on a AthlonXP 1800+? If so, how does it work for you?

ok my system is only just above min
dell inspiron laptop (8200)
p41.7ghz
geforce 4 440 go 32mb
256mb ddr ram
5400rpm HD
windows 2k sp4

If I set resolution to 1400x1050 and everything except textures 2 max nd put textures at mid then I get 40-60fps hope this is a guide as how it will run for you

There is a place far, far away called the Steam website. Here lies an ancient treasure; the fabled System Requirements. Legend has it that the holder of this mythical list will be able to tell whether or not his or her computer is capable of running Half-Life 2.

But be wary, traveler! The road ahead is dangerous. Along it lies much Googling! You have been warned...

Now! Go forth, find yonder reqs, and stop posting these "will my computer do this?" threads. :p

Sean, this is funny. I did this exactly in the same order and that's how I got here. First I travelled the long journey to Steams' site and couldnt found the mythical system requirements. In fact, I searched their forum and found nothing close to my question. Then I consulted the magic google wizard which lead me here. Since this forum was "Steam and HL2 support" I figured it was acceptable to ask this question here.

Thank you Rbentley100. I'm hoping my 1GB ram and 128MB video card will offset my slow cpu enough to make the game enjoyable.
