no, there's another thread about this. The jist of it is always ask permission first, don't do that and you'll only piss them off and at best get away with a cease and desist, at worse your parents could end up in the shit with the law. And they'll take it out on you buy selling your computer to pay towards the court fee's.

Always ask permission and if they say no, then don't use it.

Two questions you need to answer to see if you can use something:

1. Did you create it?

2. Do you have permission?

If you asnwered "no" to these questons then NO YOU CANNOT USE IT!

there are some great bands out there that will give you permission, but they are hard to find and contact. managed to get permission for my mod, and the band in question's music is sweeet :)

failing that, i did hear of a site that had some decent stuff on it, all royalty free. have a google, sorry i cant remember its name

mods wouldent be making a profit. the overall out come of either freeware or shareware is to make money toward a company. though id email them to make sure.

In the United States and Canada, if you dont protect your copyright, you loose it. As a conciquence, companies are very lible to take leagal aciton against infringers even if they are making no money; you cannot use copyrighted material without premission irregardless of wether your making money or not.

Is it yours? Do you have premission? No? Then you cant use it. End of story.

Just put an MP3 player in your mods UI so people can play their own copyrighted songs. That way any legal problems fall on them, not you.

If you are using Freeplay Music for:

1. *Programming content to be included in an ASCAP or BMI licensed US TV Broadcasts, as well as later rebroadcasts of same ex-US (excludes local-only TV, community access TV, Radio and Advertising Commercials)
2. Feature-Length Films released by a major studio
3. Private Non-Commercial Use (Non-revenue generating or associated)
4. Educational, Non-Commercial use (limited to school grounds and classroom - non broadcast)

Then Freeplay's musical compositions and recordings may be used (broadcast, synchronized and/or copied) without fee.

i asked him to confirm on the shareware/freeware issue with the site creater. one thing id suggest to you personally is not to act like such a smartass, or make fun of other peoples english (as i've noticed you doing in other threads) all the while raping the english language with that kind of spelling.

Sorry, I didnt realize your comments were in reference to freeplay.

Most mods create their own music. To avoid the hassle, I recommend you to do the same.

Yeah you cant use freeplay music for a mod purpose, according to the sites creater. Ah well, they werent that good anyway.

Creating your own music is better anyway. You can score it to fit the mod perfectly. Can also sell it too, no laws preventing you from doing that with your own music. Valve can only stop you selling your mod (though they'll apparantly allow you to sell it via steam for a share of your profits) Soundtrack though, thats all yours if you do it yourself :)
