While Will lead the discussion for the most part, acting sort of like a moderator to keep the momentum flowing, Ocean took the mic early in the presentation and talked about some of the production decisions the design team tackled when starting the design process on Spore. Since Ocean is the art director on the game, one of the early issues centered on if they wanted to make the game look realistic or more cartoony. One of the big problems with making things look realistic is that all of the creatures would have to animate exactly as you would expect them to animate in real life if they were to be believable, which was a daunting task, especially since the team wanted to give the players so much control over creating their own life forms. The decision to go with more of a cartoon look was eventually decided on, and early focus-testing seemed to indicate it was a step in the right direction. As Chaim explained it, "You put big eyes on something and people automatically love it."
Rest is here. Video. (Top left)
Edit- operantly I forgot what year it was and didn't realize that the video is kinda old. And I spelled Will Wright wrong. =/
