A week ago, I had a fantastic idea for the design of a future game called a life game. I decided that this kind of game would use genetic algorithms to simulate the evolution of life on a single world, and that eventually, you would always get a sentient species which would advance so far as to conquer their own world and expand to other worlds. From there, you could have vast massive-multiplayer oriented battles between civilizations that evolved on your computer. At the time I thought this was a very good idea, and I adapted it to a book which I am currentley writing called The Game of Life.

Now, imagine my surprise when I went to gamespy.com and checked out news from GDC. Beleive it or not, Will Wright, the designer of Sim City and The Sims came up with the EXACT same idea as I had! The only difference, he actually put this idea into action, and showed a demo of what I think has the potential of being the most addictive and greatest game idea ever, IMHO.

I agree, this will deffinately be an increadibly good game. Can't wait for E3 so that we will know more about it.

Yeah, Spore is the great thing on the horizon for me. Apparantly it'll be tiny in size and stuff, and be completely build by the community in a SETi fashion (where users contribute their species rather than processed data :P)

It looks odd and fun at the same time. I will have to watch out for it.

Looks really weird and cool, can't wait to have a look.

but just imagine this as sort of a massive multiplayer type thing, with players submitting species all the way from protists to herds of animals to extremley advanced intergalactic species, you would have entire world biologies, and you could have sort of mini-dramas unfolding on every planet, with alliances and rivalries between planets. It would be like a community-created sci-fi universe! :rolling:

That would be the best game ever made.

I'd stop writing that book if I were you. Will Wright will sue your ass.

I am crapping myself thinking about how cool this is going to be...help...

I don't know if I like the idea of giving everyone a tool that can make any species they want and then let them upload it to other peoples computers. Imagine, you make your little creature and then BAM! Giant penises invade your planet and make your creatures into slaves.

Also, that bear... It was a fairly violent carnivore.

You don't have to upload the peni unless you want to.

Brilliant!

One thing though, as he spoke about exploring the galaxy and finding other planets, are those planets still controlled by players, or did the player download that species and AI took over?

I think they just downloaded the species.
