October 22nd.

Vista machines sold near the release date will be able to upgrade to Win7 cheaply or for free (to be determined).

I'm happy with Vista and haven't seen any reason to upgrade to Win7 ATM. I suspect there are a lot of XP users who might feel differently.

Going to be upgrading to Windows 7 once I start hearing a lot of positive stuff about it.

That's not far off now then.

I won't be getting rid of XP for a long time, but I'll dual boot Win7. I'll probably prefer to use it unless I have a problem.

Microsoft should give all Vista users a free upgrade as an apology to the disaster we Vista users had to put up with.

Got Vista post-SP1, been keepin' it real ever since. If I do end up switching to 7, it definitely won't be for a while.

Have you been off the internet for awhile? Reception of windows 7 has been very positive even in the beta and RC stages.

Win7 is awesome, but they're going to charge an arm and a leg for it I bet. I'll probably end up sticking with the Release Candidate until it runs out.

Well, that's cool I guess.
I shudder to think what they're going to charge for it though and what the system reqs will be.

I think people were extremely unfair to Vista, it's a perfectly stable and quality operating system. But I'm still on XP on my home computer and plan to upgrade to win 7 early next year.

People are unfair to Vista. Pre-SP1 it was bag of shite, I don't think anybody can disagree about that, but now it's perfectly fine.

I'll be upgrading to 7 from XP as well. Since I installed the beta in February I haven't touched my XP partition at all. :O

So, Vista is very much worth buying now?

Been using Windows 7 exclusively for this new PC of mine. I love it.

Once it's released, I'm switching to Windows 7. Is there actually a real name, instead of just "Windows 7"?

I'm definitely purchasing Windows 7 when it comes out, given college doesn't suck all the money out of my savings account. I'm really happy with RC1 right now. Like others, I have barely touched my XP partition; I only use it to play Starcraft.

Windows 7 is the final name. I think this is the first time the development name has carried over to the final release.

Er, its codename was Blackcomb (as in Whistler, Blackcomb, Canada!) for years.

Anyone know how it's "7" though? 3.0, 3.1, then 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, Vista. Shouldn't it be like Windows 10?

They probably liked the idea of seven for several reasons.

It's not 6.

It's not a really high number so it makes it seem like... "yeah, well, we realize we just made an operating system a couple years ago called vista adn that you'll have to buy another one now, but we don't normally do this you see? only number 7"

And come on, who doesn't like lucky 7?

It's based on the code versions

Windows 1.0
Windows 2.0
Windows 3.0
Windows 95,98,ME (Windows 4) 9x series were all based on code version 4
Windows 2000 and XP (Windows 5) XP was revision 5.1 at code version 5
Windows Vista (Windows 6) Vista was code version 6
Windows 7 Here it gets strange because the code version of Windows 7 is 6.1 due to it not being that much different to Vista. However it seems like Microsoft are still classing it as seventh in line.

Yeah like Penguin said it's from the Windows Kernel versions. Personally I like how "Windows 6.1" sounds but I guess the guys at marketing didn't, probably due to it's association with Vista and how a ".1" makes it sound like not much has changed.

You can find out a bit more info here.
