windows audio acceleration settings

should i have audio acceleration set to 'full acceleration' or 'standard acceleration' in the windows control panel, and how does this relate to EAX (which i know next to nothing about)? does it depend on whether i select high or medium sound quality in-game? as you can probably tell, i know next to nothing about how sound works in games

i should point out that i'm not having audio problems, i just want to know what the correct settings should be. i'm not really hearing much from the rear speakers. i'm also wondering if i'll get any performance boost from using the medium setting.
