Okay... I know I have a lot of hardware issue topics I post in these threads, but this one has to be one of the big boys. On one hand it's very small and sort of insignificant, but on the other hand it's something that drives me absolutely INSANE.
Auto arrange. I have icons on my desktop in an arrangement that is sort of first come, first served. That's the way I work with my desktop. I remember where things are based on when I put them there and where in the order they are. It works very well for me. Things I have done more recently are generally at the end of the list, things I have done a lot later are at the beginning of the list. Sometimes I'll move important things to the end of the list if I want to access them more often.
However, I run into the problem of windows auto arrange. Now in the past, it has worked beautifully. My items would automatically shift around to fill in any gaps where I have them, but they'd essentially keep their position. However, lately... my desktop items sometimes when I restart completely reshuffle around based on the auto arrange order. In the past they never did, now they do. This is SUPREMELY frustrating. If I have a lot of items on my desktop, everything is moved from where it was, and it's impossible for me to find things with any sort of speed anymore.
Also, there has been the problem of auto arrange being checked, but often the gaps don't even get filled. To rectify the problem, I have to uncheck auto arrange and recheck it. This has been happening VERY frequently lately. Don't use autoarrange you say? But then I am left with gaps in my file arrangements, and files I download fill those gaps, when I'd rather all the downloads go to the end of the list to be there, rather than piece mealed around all the various gaps.
Is there a way to have auto arrange work in the manner that it automatically shuffles items around to fill gaps, but not actually arrange items based on name or last modified, etc? This is the way auto arrange has worked for me in the past, and it was wonderful. But now, not anymore.
