after setting up a router and stuff etc, windows decided by itself that it wasnt activated. even though it was.

it told me that the hardware had significantly changed since windows was installed. which is odd because this PC has remained the same for ages. so i went to activate over the phone but there wasnt an installation ID generated! and there isnt an activate windows button in the start menu...

is windows having me on? it keeps popping up telling me to activate windows with this genuine windows-ey thing in my taskbar. WINDOWS IS ALREADY ACTIVATED!!!!!!!!

Usually if you reinstall Windows, you must activate it again, even though you did activate already.

Make sure you activate Windows with the same name and address you did activate it with the first time.

Good Luck.

Any significant change will cause it to want to activate again. Mostly things like motherboard, possibly IDE drivers, motherboard drivers, etc.. Blame it on piraters. There is a run command to bring it up and then it should generate an installation ID when you decide to do it over the phone.

How windows works is: It has a file that has a key based on your hardware. Any significant change in your hardware that may think it is a new computer because the hardware key it just made and the one stored does not match up. Therefor it will want it to be reactivated.

The person on the phone should tell you how to bring it up otherwise just google it. I've reactivated mine around 3 times over the phone(I do a lot of stuff). Microsoft has always been great and quick in helping me. Nothing like Virgin Mobile when the ****er forgets to scan the card and I have to bring out an old fax machine and fax them my receipt and the damn card cuz the guy didn't activate it.

i activated it now, but i must have activated this windows at least 9 times by now. seriously. the amount of Hard drives and formats ive been through....

Lol, I know what you mean.

It used to be, that everytime i'd get a virus or a bit of spyware, i'd just reformat the whole shebang.

Too lazy to do anything about it :/
