Microsoft wants Windows Media Player to be your one-stop multimedia headquarters. After a less-than-speedy installation, the app proposes to become the default player for a number of media formats. Make sure to uncheck any formats you want other programs to handle. The overhauled interface lets you manage your media library, rip CDs, burn discs, shop for tunes, and listen to Net radio stations from the full-screen view, but many users may prefer to listen to music or watch video in skin mode. Windows Media Player 10.0 offers nearly two dozen skins from which to choose, ranging from the pedestrian to the outlandish. You'll also find a wide variety of visualizations and a 10-band equalizer for improving your audio-visual experience. In our testing, ripping CDs to MP3s and WMAs was a speedy and hassle-free process. The CD burner worked without a hitch, and importing and organizing our music library proved equally painless.

The Net radio offerings, which include a number of presets and almost 1,000 stations from around the United States, impressed us. Like many competitors, Windows Media Player 10.0's music store features $.99 downloads with some restrictions placed on use, although none seemed unreasonable. The music store's selection didn't seem as voluminous as others we've seen; the Alternative section contained only 24 albums, although the store was in beta mode when we looked at it. However, if it doesn't have what you're looking for, you can browse other stores such as Napster, Musicmatch, and Wal-Mart from directly within the application. All told, this version of Windows Media Player isn't missing much and should give its competitors a serious run for their money.

What do you guys think? Serious iTunes competitor? Or all fluff.

iTunes is like retard easy to use. WMP has never given me that feeling before. So no.

Plus I don't think I can take my AAC (the iTunes songs) and transfer them over anyways.

I've installed WMP as i prefer to use it for video formats (not DVD mind) but i still use winamp for all audio files...

I like it a lot nice and clean/fast, I still prefer it to winamp and even use it for DVD's.

NO!!!1 THAT IS THE DEVIL!!!!11

I will nevah!!!11 use WMP, I use Winamp and BSplayer.

Same here, I prefer Winamp for audio and WMP for video. Also you share my name. Maybe we share the same... nevermind

i've sued 10 since the beat was released, that's right, i've probably been using it for a long long time. I'm going to install the full one now. la di da! bye!

is 10 for xp only, im using 2k and when i clicked download it sent me to a page to dl win player 9

I lub my WMP 10. Plus using FoxyTunes extension for Firefox I can listen to my songs without even opening WMP10. :P

One thing I wish they "fixed" about WMP10, is that it never saves your sort order for your media library. :( I always have to set it Artist to ascending.

Still perfer iTunes and winamp. I only use WMP for those videos off the web. ;)

Is their really a reason to get windows media player 10?

Now that ive reformated i really dont want to get it as it forces you to use WMFMGER or what ever it is. Its suppose to track people useing non offical mp3;s or something like that. All it does is take up ram.

Is their a way to force that not to run?

Windows XP Gold 5.5 doesn't have Windows Media Player and all those unused stuff, like accessibility proggy.

I use WMP only for videos on the web, everything else iTunes rocks all the way, and I also use it for the iPod so theres no need to use 2 programs for 1 format...

edit: YAY not a Zombie anymore lol

I think that WMP 10 uglified the interface, and even made it less intuitive. WMP 9, was, in my opinion, the best media player ever made.

I agree WMP 9 owns WMP 10, 10 is just plane ugly they are moving towards the iTunes look. They are trying to sell you stuff every where and it wont remember how I had my media library sorted. I uninstalled it as soon as I got it and went back to 9. iTunes sucks ass but I do use winamp because I like the way you can put it in the system tray and have it fade out when not clicking on it. So in conclusion WMP 10 sucks use WMP 9.
