My apologies if this question has been previously answered... . Ok i formatted my drives using XP (NTFS). I want to install Win2K and wanted to know if I would run into any problems being that XP uses a different file system? (XP = NTFS 3.1 2k = 3.0 *Correct me if im wrong*) I dont want to corrupt any of my drives and lose any data. ;( Allow the schooling to begin

I was about to give a good answer, but you confused me.. There are different versions of NTFS? hmm.. Good to know. :)

Unless you use a program such as partition magic, it'll overwrite your boot record and ruin your XP install (barring you do a repair install, but XP repair installs are a bad idea, screws alot of stuff up).

I installed 98 after XP, I read up on it before I did it, basically, if you want to dual boot, you have to install the older operating system before the newer (IE. 98 before XP or Win2k before XP). As sad as that is, there are alternatives to getting dual booted without problems.

I can vouch for using a program such as Parition Magic, worked wonders. Basically lets you create however many partitions you want.. all I had to do was create a 10GB partition, set it as active, reboot with the 98 CD and format.

Following that, I got an OS loader (OSL2000), couldn't be happier. Works without a hitch :)

Hope this helps.

Hmm

Well I don't exactly want to dual boot. I want to get rid of XP and go to 2000. On some forums some people say that the different file systems will matter and possibly corrupt data if check disk is ran; others say it doesnt matter :dozey: Hmm any ideas?

You actually believed Windows NT uses the same version of NTFS that Windows XP? :P

My bad :) lol, anyhow.

Your best bet would be to install 2K on a seperate partition, then see if you can access your files on the XP partition. That way if 2K can't read your XP NTFS partition, you can hop on XP and drop your files to 2K's NTFS and merge the partitions. ..if that made any sense at all..

Edit: I'm sure there are other alternatives, but it's best just to make sure your data stays safe. I'd take it safe, personally

Yup faravid, the same way that xp uses the same fat 32 as win 98.. Or is that another version too?? :)

FAT32 haven't been modified due to the fact that it's perfect (so damn bugged that Bill Gates can clap his hands together hysterically(or whatever)).

Thanks a lot so far guys! Keep any more info coming

hehe, ok.

But do you know the difference between the two NTFS versions? What bugs were implemented in the new version? :P

The newest bugs must be: Ignoring errors caused by broken memory chips(=corrupts data) and random corrupting data on request to store data on HD with perfectly working system and of course, the infamous NTFS error detection which should detect data corruptions and errors on HD etc... But it doesn't in most cases, you have to run chkdsk from time to time.

Anybody else have any idea if I'll run into any problem? Any other from WinXP to Win2k gamers out there? :o

Well... just convert the file system using Win2K CD (boot using it) and enter the repair mode, then the command is convert x: /FS:NTFS, or you can convert it in the install...

Ok im actually considering doing a fresh install of XP again. MY only problem with XP, is that after I install SP1, my computer takes forever to boot. ( Considering my specs: 3.25ghz P4, 1024mb PC3200, etc etc.) Any my friends older systems even boot quicker. I have installed the hotfix released by Microsoft but still did not improve my slowdown. Also when I finally get to desktop, everything is smooth until my hard drive starts a massive load. Then magically it just stops and works fine. Should I just not install SP1? Any recommendations or solutions?

I've found installing SP1 via Windows Update doesn't work too well. For ease of install and best results, I suggest "slipstreaming" SP1 into your XP install.

Directions for "slipstreaming" SP1 into your XP install here

It works beautifully compared to Windows Update, I highly recommend this method of installing SP1. If you still are having trouble after slipstreaming SP1, I'd suggest heading over to TweakXP and asking for help. The people at TweakXP know XP in and out; I've had alot of issues fixed by visiting that site.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot for the posts! I'll probably be doing a clean install tonight, so hopefully all goes well. :flame:
