I doubt anyone here has the answer, but whenever I go to the Windows Update site it either says I need to enable ActiveX controls (I have) or add windowsupdate.microsoft.com to the Trusted Sites list (I have). The Updates worked fine until just recently, and I haven't changed the settings at all. There's very little chance of virus or trojan since I just assembled the computer this morning.

Any ideas? I'm really at your mercy since dial-up is horrible for troubleshooting online. I can't even ask for help from Microsoft because the e-mail requires the same ActiveX controls and such. Is there any way to "repair" Internet Explorer? (People on the web said that the same thing occurs with Fire-fox, and I haven't found any working solutions yet).

I'm running Windows XP SP2 on an AMD Athlon 64. If no one has a solution, is there anyway to download the .NET framework? I need it for the ATI CCC (control panel thingy), and yes, I know I could just get the old fashioned control panel, but downloading that with dial-up is worse than downloading the framework.

well turn on ActiveX like it asks you to ;)
if you use exploder-> Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom Level -> Enable ActiveX :)

Naw...really? It's as on as possible. In the Internet Security page, everything, whether its got to do with ActiveX, is enabled. And I mean everything. The trusted sites list has every combination of the words microsoft, update, and window I can think of in addition to the ones they tell me. I'll try calling them tomorrow, but I don't want to have to pay lots of money.

hmmm, have you all these checked?

Click to select the Enable check box for the following items:
• Download signed ActiveX controls
• Download unsigned ActiveX controls
• Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe
• Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins
• Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting

Click OK two times.

Yup...got all those and more. If it's got an "enabled" box next to it, it's checked (I enabled them after I got cut off, so no...I didn't do something stupid and download a virus).
So ... anyone know where I can get the .NET framework if I can't get it through Windows Update? I can get the "critical" updates just fine using the auto download option, but not so with the "optional" software updates such as .NET and WMP 10.
