Pics:

A simple AVI but each time I try to open it or any other video format it always asks me to choose a program to open it, but shouldn't Windows know what to do already?

ALL picture formats look like this, however, they open up like any normal picture but it is annoying not having the ability to see the picture before opening it.

These aren't major problems but they started happening for no reason. I ran a registry clean with CCleaner but it still has the same problem. Any idea whats up?

One thing that causes this sometimes is that files lose all their associations if you uninstall what used to be the default program, although it is strange that windows doesn't know what to do with those jpgs by default. What version of Windows are you using?

What do you do when faced with that pop-up? You should go to 'select the program from a list...', then in the subsequent window make sure the 'Always use this program...' box is checked, then select whatever program you want to use. If it doesn't remember your settings after that, it sounds like something is borked.

install/run VLC media player and let it associate all video formats with it. for images I dunno, did you uninstall windows picture preview somehow?

Open windows explorer
Tools > folder options
File types tab

Thar be your file associations.

edit: Its fixed. Thanks for the help. I still don't know why it got that way.
