On my laptop I have (and liked) Windows XP Home Edition. Unfortunately, the OS came preloaded on the hard drive and the comp didn't have an XP only CD (it was part of the QuickRestore CD).

Now that I'm building a new computer, I'm wondering what the differences between Home and Professional Editions are (in efficiency and performance). I can get Pro through my school for about $10. Would the additional Pro features slow down or speed up my computer?

speed up, make more secure , allow better networking, less bugs

home is basically pro, with alot stripped out, pro is more compelte and thusly less buggy. less chances of crashes and hell its gotta be better it cots more:P

home = Stand alond computer gmaes web browsing

pro = Half decent network, computer games web browsing with better coherence with other design, more functionality, And tidier!!

there are no differences in effciency and performance. if any OS would go even 1 FPS faster it would be home edition, because its the same OS with a few less additions.

DSD: do yourself a favor and disregard this misinformation.

I heard Pro only had a few extra networking options and some easier capabilities.

If it is ever going to be on a network then get Pro. For a laptop, I would probably recommend Pro because I would assume you would connected to random networks (Wired or Wireless) and need it to be able to connect, where ever you go.

Now Pro has some security settings enabled by default and NTFS for harddrive formating by default but Home has them as well. They have to be enabled or setup ahead of time though (such as NTFS formating) on Home.

Otherwise Home will do. Also, you can get OEM version instead of Retail to save some money.

Well...since my University has a license I was able to get XP Pro for $7, so cost wasn't really a factor. It was more a performance question (I wasn't sure if Pro was better for corporate stuff as opposed to gaming). I went ahead and got Pro since it doesn't seem to have any downsides.

Very nice. My XP copy was only 10$ as well. I love that schools sell it to students for cheap.

i also bought my xp pro as a student special, about $15-20. i wasn't a student there though, went with my friend who was a student there, hehe.
