Hey guys, I hope I can post this even though it isn't related to hl2 modelling... I am tired of worrying about poly counts and whatnot when I model, so until I get real good at modelling and animation and texturing the whole bit, I am just going to follow tutorials and make my own models... I plan on making the edges of the board a dark wood color rather than a shiny metal... Also I want the pieces to be more glasslike, but I haven't been able to find some good material sets yet for things like this and I am not very good with the material editor...

send me the file and we can virtually play eachother! lol

Nice work buddy

I don't know if you want C&C on this but anyway: you should try to get a better flow from the bottom part of the pieces to the 'head' part, on the close-ups theres a visible edge which stops the light reflection from flowing.

For a more glass-like material I'd suggest more transparency, less distortion and a bit less of that bumpy effect. btw, I'm working on a high rez chess set too, but quite different from this one.

seems nice and heavy on the meshsmooth.

I suggest reading some tutorials about HDRI lighting and reflections..
