This is my latest model. I have been using XSI | EXP, the only thing I can afford. It still needs a grip and a few more things. It's very bland but remember it's a WIP. Please keep the crits constructive. :D

Meh, it looks like a vase imho, but thats because it looks like a phunnel(sp?) when it's open at the top like that... could you do some render pics?

Are you working on Jedi: Timeline?

on-topic: Sorry to say it but it looks lk a vase (just lk Maxi said). Maybe you should add it the button (on) and a few in-stripes.

No I am not working on Jedi Timeline. And I can't render because XSI | EXP doesn't allow render pics. What does, "Maybe you should add it the button (on) and a few in-stripes." mean?

ye i got XSI 3.5 but never really got into using it. I reall need to use it, its just been wasted atm :(

Can't you render and take a screenshot?

Y'know, PrintScreen key and then paste?

You mean you have XSI 3.5 EXP

If your saying you've got the full version and never really using it, then your using a warez version ;(

Here is a pic of the render. I just noticed, I suck at modelling... ;( ;(

practice practice practice!

My first model was an unrecognizeable mix of edges and points with flipped faces and stretched thextures. :-P

Are you just beginning on modeling?

I heard XSI is a horrible beginner's program. Start off with Maya, gmax, or Milkshape 3D (I find that Maya is the easiest out of all three, and the most powerful as well).

I already used all 3 and I loved gmax, but it's not compatible with XP fully.

Wings3D is currently a little underfeatured, but really fun and easy to use...

If your a beginner i strongly recommend Milkshape3d becuase its really easy to learn. Then if your good enough go to maya, but, you may have to get a book because its got a higher learning curve then 3dsmax, milkshape3d ect, but its well worth it becuse its one of the most powerful modeling/Animation/special effects programs out there...

I have not used the free version im talking about Maya Unlimited 5.0(the one they used for finding nemo ect.) Its pretty complicated to learn.

Well, 3Ds Max was probably the easiest to learn. Why? I do not know. I just wish I had the money for Max... MilkShape 3D was so bad I laughed.

XSI a horrible beginners program? Are you on crack or any kind of mind altering drug?

Sorry, but I just disagree. XSI maybe not be the best program out there, but it's certainly the best beginners program. XSI is a revamped version of SoftImage 3d, meaning it's interface was created from the ground up in this decade; which of course means it's easy to use and actually logical, unlike the archaic 3dstudio max and an aging maya interface.

Yeah... I find myself fumbling more with the interface of 3DSMax rather than creating a tangible looking object :p

Maya's control setup is probably one of the best reasons why I like it - middle click + modifier moves the camera, right click brings up radial menu, etc.

Haven't used XSI though. I've only heard about how "hard" it is though. Right now, I'm in the process of downloading it, so hopefully I can give you guys my impressions within a few days. :p

You might want to keep the fact that your downloading it to yourself lol.......

He could be downloading the free version...

And, ray_man, yes Wings3D is free. It's open source.

I use GMax all the time on XP. I use the gamepak called RenX(use to model for Command & Conquer: Generals) It works fine for me. Milkshape is a decent program and easy to learn and use for beginners. Its very basic compare to GMax, but if you start off with MS3D its a good intro to GMax/3DSM. I would suggest learning the ins and outs of MS3D and then moving onto GMax. ( as long as you are looking to use free programs...)(My opinion may seem alittle biased because I haven't used Maya or XSI)

As for your model, use a reference pic. It will help out alot. And don't be afraid to add some polys. In that render, the top portion is only made out of a cylinder...
Here is a good example of a reference pic that you could use...

This is my lightsaber. I know the metal/shininess is overdone, i was just testing the brazil rendering plugin...which expired a long time ago.

Well the main problem is that it won't load the model whenever I save it. :) ;(

I wouldnt recomend Lightwave when i started i ripped my hair out trying to figure out all the feature thingys.

Don't people use Milkshape3D anymore? :p

Hehe, that's what I used to use.
