So I just moved into another apartment.. and it turns out I won't have to pay for my internet (as long as I keep the laptop in my bedroom). It was the same situation in the last apartment, and I'm starting to feel a tad guilty about it (especially when I know I'm bogging down their connection with a torrent download). I've even rearranged the furniture in my room so I get the best signal..

So, Halflife2.net, is it wrong to ride on someone's wireless if they're not spart enough to encrypt it??

I don't think it's technically illegal, but it's not neighborly.

Soak it up, man. Internet payments can be expensive.

It's your choice, man. Personally, I think it's a shit thing to do- but they're stupid for not putting a password on it.

i agree ^

its not illegal to use a non-encrypted wireless signal. its there fault that its not protected , but alot of people dont because they dont have the knowledge to ,and as you know alot of the isp's now are giving out wireless modems; they most likely wont be protected when setup thus leaving the user un-aware.

I personally wouldn't mind if ppl shared my wireless, as long as I weren't bogged down.

You're feeling guilty for a reason... it's a bullshit thing to do. If you really don't want to pay, just ask them if it's alright. Wouldn't advise it though since if it was someone like me I'd hate you forever.

lol that dude made it obvious that he was stealing it. if your jacking internet from home then you most likely wont be caught.

Go for the ride! I've got wireless of my own but my neighbor got 4x the speed. He eventually got it secured probably cause of big mouthed neighbors we thought would be smart enough to stfu. Not a big deal, I only get wifi on my laptop and don't really download with it anyways.

It's like plugging your telephone cord into someones router. If they don't want it on, sure they should password it, but lack of security doesn't make something any more right.

As the owner of an OPEN wireless network i'd say its a pretty stupid thing to do , its a real pain because my network restarts itself every time a client connects . I've taken to kicking them off automaticaly rather than actually securing the connection. while i guess you could keep this going for a fair bit , you should know that they and anyone else connected to the network can sniff the stream, capture packets over the network and have a fairly good idea of what you're doing. I definitely wouldnt use that connection to make online purchases.

Your a jerk, and you should feel ashamed of yourself.

*double-checks Router encryption*

I pick up my Grandmother's neighbours wireless on my Wii all the time.
Only browsed, nothing really serious.

It's every nerd for themselves on the tinterwebs.....

New rule:
If you are too stupid/lazy/ignorant to secure your connection your wifi MUST be stolen.

Even if it's passworded, chances are it's just the default factory password anyway, and there's plenty of lists out there with those ;)

Depends upon how you are using it. General low bandwidth surfing I would say is okay but being on 24/7 downloading gigabytes of pron wouldn't be.

Find out whether they have any limits imposed by the ISP. If they have, then stop it and get your own. If they don't, you should stop it, but I think, as long as you have the courtesy to slip in an envelope with cash that covers half of their I-net bill I don't think it's a bad thing to do.

Or talk to them and agree to share the costs.

With my bank balance I fear nothing.
Also, why and how would my neighbours (who would be the stupid/ignorant ones for not using a secure network) steal credit card information....
Your statement is suggesting that people who have no problem stealing someones wireless connection must therefore frequently access unsafe networks in public places and transmit their financial information over an unencrypted wireless connection.
This would be incorrect, the irony being that in order to call people stupid/lazy/ignorant you must assume other factors. When you assume you make an ass out of u and me.

hehe

New, new rule:
If anyone is stupid enough to connect to a dodgy internet connection in an airport or something called "FREE WIFI EXTRA SAFE"
And your laptop gets hacked - you fail

a) They might not be that stupid ;) , i keep my network open , granted i have several adminstrative tools keeping people out .. but its open.
b) Other users connected to the network can capture your packets :) .

i was just trying to show you how stupid it is to make such asumptions .

I would stop using torrents on his Internet, For starters if you download anything illegal, he will get prosecuted for it, not you, and that is not fair. Also you don't know what plan he is on he might only have a 2GB limit and you may be taking him over his limit forcing him to pay more. And what happens if he likes to play online? your just lagging him out.
I think you are being selfish using bittorrent on his connection, just cause he might not know how to secure it is no excuse.
I don't think it's that big a deal if your just surfing on his net, i actually have an agreement with my neighbor that allows me to use thiers aswell just to surf or play online no torrenting though.

Who cares? As long as you don't get them in trouble.
Or hell, do it anyways.
As long as your not my neighbour. Then i'd have to to kill you.
