Like some of you, I will be ordering/building a new system. The problem is I'm not familiar with the whole wireless networking area, which is the route I wanna go. When i order this new system, I wanna be free of ethernet cables and such. If you guys would explain to me exactly what I need to build a wireless home network, I'd greatly appreciate it. Or point to me a site that explains it good.

Edit: A wireless network between two computers..two different rooms, one house.

In my experience, Wireless internet works, But is Horrendous for online gaming, I tried it then a day later took it back and got me a 50 foot ethernet cable, If i were you id go ethernet heh

If wireless isn't the way to go for gaming as well, can anyone else confirm this?

I have wireless and my gaming is fine. I can find about 200 or so servers with ping less than 100 in CSS, more in CS. I notice no lag whatsoever. I am interested in updating my wireless to the G type, as I currently run B. I dont know if I'll see any difference though, so I am hesitant to do so.

I see, I read that the G version is the best, because its the most recent one. Im curious, are you sharing the network with multiple computers, senfield?

2 computers are on the wireless, another is through a LAN connection. I am the only one playing online games, but my bro does dl off of Kazaa.

If you get wireless, get wireless G. My cousin has it (of course his PC sucks and can only play regular CS), but I don't notice much of a difference. All you need is a wireless router, and a wireless card receiver for each PC.

I don't like wireless, takes forever to setup. I setup my cousin's wireless network and it took me an hour to get it right. My house is wired, took me 5 minutes (minus drilling time). On a side note...I proved I'm better than a professional guy with a degree and all. Ex gf had some professional guy install it, 80 bucks, and he couldn't get her laptop to stay online for more than 5 minutes. I went there, fixed it within 10 minutes, she's online 24/7 now. Waste of 80 bucks when I could've done it for free...and got booty on the side :D

How far would you say you are from your router? I am going to be running wireless, and my computer will be 2 floors away from my router.

2 floors should give you as Windows says "Good" reception, I'd prefer "Excellent" but "Good" is fine.

Do you recommend any specific router/pc card to use with wireless?

hmmm
then i advise not to get LINKSYS wireless g router and card :) cause i was 50 feet away, with only a wall inbetween us, and i still got horrible loss n all that, maby i just dont know how to use a wireless router/card.

ive had tons of wireless set ups and tried tons. dotn touch netgear with a 10 foot poll. i had one of their b systems, lest sjust say my connection gave out every 5 minutes. ive also played aorund with linksys, smc and dlink. linksys is good, but kind of a bitch to set up. best bet is to go with a smc or dlink wireless g setup and you wont be dissapointed

Wireless is good (no cables) but it also has some downfalls. If you can get past the bad then you should be OK. Personally, wired is the only way to go for a dedicated PC. Wireless is great for a laptop or PDA though. ;)

-speed decreases the further away you are from the router
-it is not as stable (there are interferences that can disconnect your connection)
-it is not as secure as anyone can connect within the range (though you can setup encryption and disable broadcasting)
-there is a bit of latency (delay) with wireless

Now if you get a good model for a wireless router and have it all setup running and secure then you should be OK. I would recommend getting a 802.11G(54) router as the B(11) is a little bit slower and the G(108) is software compression which uses system resources and is hardly faster than G(54). Not to mention it costs more. You may see a few 'N' routers which might be worth looking into though.

Personally, I have a Netgear 802.11G(54) WGR614 router which I use the wireless only for my PDA. It was the same price as a wired router so whatever. ;)
Works great. I was going inbetween this one and Dlink's G model as the range and speed was the best over the comparable Linksys model.

Yes, it can only go as fast as the lowest part.
B card + B router = B speed
G card + B router = B speed
B card + G router = B speed
G card + G router = G speed

Same with the G108 vs G54. In reality, the G108 does not go much faster than the G54, the 108 is just theoretical.

$bump$

I really need help on choosing a router and pc card.
