Slipping in under the radar next year is Wish, an ambitions new MMORPG. I stress the RPG part because thats what this game is really going for. In most MMO's your stuck in the level tredmill for months, doing repetitive "quests" over and over again, and never really making a difference in the world.

Wish is going to change all of that. Featuring:
-One large, seemless, world supporting 50,000+ players at once. No zones, no shards, just a single world to explore.
-Non-repeating quests; if you venture out to kill the dragon plauging the county-side... it's dead, forever.
-True monster hunting: monsters don't have set spawn points and rome the world freely. If you go out and kill a pack of wolves, their dead forever, and wont just spawn up again in 5 minutes.
-Open ended skill system (Ultima Online style): Forget the grind! Your proficiency increases in skills depending on how you actually use them. Also, with this system, "lower level" players will be able to party with "higher level" players more. Forget cookie-cutter classes!
-Live Content: A dedicated team of Story Tellers will run the world and it's dynamic events going on.
-Players actually make a difference! Your actions truly effect the games on-going story.
-So much more...

I really havent been this excited about an MMO since I played UO.
There are currently Beta 2.0 Sign-Ups going on. Beta 2.0 will start January 1st, so hop on now!

I'd highly recommend reading the FAQ, backstory, and dev journals. It's all good stuff.

It doesn't look like it'll be able to compete visually, but I signed up for the beta. It looks like you get in straight away for beta 2 that starts on the 1st of Jan.

pretty much all MMOs promise this, but it never does

The gfx arent that bad at all. Sure, it's no EQ2, but if you had incredible gfx, then it would be nearly impossible to have alot of players on the screen at once.

Very true, but no MMO has tried it like this either.

Looks fun. I hope this doesn't turn out to be another Star Wars Galaxies.

sounds like playing nwn online with a dedicated person being the gamemaster ;)

i signed up for the beta :)

Er, on the web page it says 10,000 players at once-not 50. =) Just letting ya know, and yeah I'm downloading it.

I played the beta for this a looong time ago and it seemed really subpar. But, i'm crossing my fingers, waiting for the next really good mmorpg. I think it will be darkfall.

Well, if it was a long time ago heres hoping they improved it.

I've played a few MMO's in their early development and they really were terrible, then after release they werent too bad at all.

The webpage says "over 10,000" and GameSpot says "50,000".
So I guess it's somewhere around 25,000 or whatever.
Their server clusters operate on a total of 176 Intel Xeon CPUs over a gigabit ethernet, so I wouldent doubt that it could take the pressure of that many players.

I signed up for the beta and all that.

Hope it's good - now i gotta free up some space, the matrix online beta takes up sooo much

Doesnt sound bad. But almost all rpgs are boring to me.

I read the webpage last night, and I could've sworn they say "50 000" players. I went back on the website to check as well. Hmm.

I hope they actually find a way to make players ROLE play, not just hunt monsters for xp. That and no monthly fee (or a good alternative to it or the fee being very low) is what is needed to make me play that MMORPG.

Good luck finding a decent MMO that dosent charge monthly.
They need to keep their servers operating, and hosting bandwidth for tens of thousands of people is not cheep.

Fair enough, but i'm sure they make a HUGE profit. Think how many people have subscribed per month then times it by the monthly fee. Blizzard will be rolling in it.

Heh, I wonder if it will actually let the players steer the story.

The only two I've ever seen that do that properly were A Tale in the Desert (I and II) and Puzzle Pirates.

Okay, here's my experience of Puzzle Pirates story telling done entirely by us (the player):

We, the Looterati, a completely player owned flag own Jorvik. It's a lovely island, and we spent 7 hours racking up the points for it, getting to know each other and our allies in the process. However, Tyr's Own is a rival flag that want Jorvik for themselves. Tyr's Own eventually lay down 100,000 PoE and declare a blockade of our island. 24 hours later, our forces collide, sinking each other in a 24 hour (unless you win 7 45 minute rounds before that point) while we try and get as many points as we can. We manage to win 3 rounds without much effort, but in round 4, Tyr's Own bring their allies in to play. Within the first 30 minutes, we were completely flattened.

Their 60 man+ frigates completely decimated our smaller brigs, smashing us. But, we did not lose our grip. We clawed back to a draw in the last 15 minutes, and with 1 minute to go, things were very, very tense. I was steering a damaged brig, trying to stop their biggest frig from earning the points that would win them the round, and possibly shatter our confidence. In the last turn of movement, I pull off my so far best piece of navigation, and manage to dodge every single shot from the frigate. Our other brigs managed to secure enough points for us to win the round by two points.

In the events following, the giant alliance that faced us there began to distrust each other, our alliance grew stronger and took over an archipegalo. Tyr's Own, dismayed at it's loss went into a period of decline, until our alliance had to kick them out of our archipegalo again.

The stories of long and tiring blockades are written exclusively by the player, and those blockades steer the fate of the ocean.

Isnt that the reason anyone creates anything, to make a profit?
I dunno about huge but I'm sure they arent poor. :rolling:

Guild Wars

And if you think about it, STEAM is also an MMO technology with no monthly fee. It has a huge server that it has to run, and it pays with games and expansion packs. So you see, it's very possible. However, the downside is the rather lousy customer support.

hmm... just got an e-mail telling me that I can download the client now...

Guess I'm in. :p

Steam sends a ton of less bandwidth, besides the games part.
See, all steam does for games is have a way for you to get to other peoples servers. An MMO sends alot more data. Onsept when it comes to preloading games. But that cost is done by when steam sells.
For example
There is a $40 dollor game
40/2 because store can double to make a profit
20x.30 because publisher takes 70%
$6!!!
With steam they make more like..
$40x.70 becuase now there taking the bigger share! No store so no doubling.
$28.
This extra $22 pays for the bandwidth etc..

So they devised a nice ol method for it all.

lol what bs comments?
just stating that this games better then wish, thats all.
don't take everything personal m8

1. Steam is not MMO at all.

2. This game sounds pretty ambitious, if it can live up to it's claims that will be awesome but there's sometimes reasons why some features such as spawning enemies become standard. I don't quite see how they will effectively replace this without some enormous flaws coming up.
It seems that they're saying they will close off the dungeon so that it can then be repopulated by the guys in control. With 10s of thousands of players, surely you would need these kinds of areas available all the time.

I like World of Warcraft. It makes me smile in my secret place.

ok this has been annoying me for some time I know that RPG stands for role playing game. But what does MMO stand for

Massively Multiplayer Online.

I don't think people should refer to "MMOs", as it doesn't make sense. Anymore than if they refer to "RPs" instead of "RPGs".

Just a pet hate. Just MMOG if you need to use an abbreviation. Or just MMG. I mean, online is implied by "Massively Multiplayer".

I am pedantic.

It could be a giant board game...Thouands of people playing full size Monopoly in London.

I stand corrected.

Ok I am in the beta and if I enjoy it and it lives up to its claims, I am gonna play it (unless the monthly fee is more then 100 SEK/Month).

I wouldnt mind if a MMOG allowed you to pay a monthly fee but if you dont want to pay it you can still play but they will throw advertisements at you.

:| I downloaded the Wish client, and I tried installing it, and it had some error. Gotta reinstall.
