I have a strange problem. Something to do with WMP is upsetting my computer.

Basically, randomly I'll double click a movie file and it will either slow the computer massively until I can close it in task manager, or the resolution of the screen will change and it looks like the screen is overscanning massively, with a huge mouse arrow and icons.

I can usually log out and back in and it cures it.

The problem also randomly happens when the computer is loading thumbnails in a folder, and also on web pages with embedded videos.

Any ideas? It only happens randomly, sometimes the computer will be fine for hours.

have you tried a reinstall or tried installing wmp10 from the windows update site (if you aren't already using it)

Yes thanks, I've tried that. I've also tried removing DivX and reinstalling it, but to no avail. I also have gone through the old and new drivers for my vid card (6800GT) and it makes no difference.

Is it just randomly, or does it always happen when viewing movie files?

Try uninstalling every movie codec that didn't come with windows, then download a new codec pack bundle from a codec site.

Its pretty random. Say I go to a funny movie site, I can click loads of videos with no problem, and then one of them will throw a wobbler. Its the same with stuff on my HD, sometimes a directory full of movies will make the computer resolution change (although its not a proper change as I don't have to go into properties and change it back, just log off and then back on - and the icons don't rearrange themselves either).

Really odd.
