It was a year ago today that the final WON servers started getting shut down. I think we should all take a moment of reflection about this great system that was so brutally destroyed by that bastard STEAM.

I suppose I don't think steam is a bad system. It serves its purpose well enough. But they really didn't have to shut WON down, did they? I lost contact with about 20 people who I used to play on WON servers.

Download speeds were incredibly slow.
It was very unstable.
Almost always down.

WON wasnt designed for the loads CS put on it(wonder why it was down days at a time) think of steam as WON 2.0. Can handle the loads and brings a whole slew of new coolio features to the table.

WON was worthless...slow as hell. I always DREADED the times when my favorites disappeared, and I had to Update servers. Took forever. Steam is wonderful. <3 <3

Yeah, well that's how I feel about Steam. I have to put the IPs of servers I like into a notepad file, as they never stay longer than a week in Steam.

And they are doing a major overhaul of freinds to make it work.

I was annoyed at the time, but now I really do think that Steam is a much better system. In fact, I can't really remember why I liked it.

Damn. I just hate when people say they dislike Steam "because it's the cool thing to do". I mean, WON sucked, but hey, who uses the in-game or Steam's own server browser? CS got a lot easier and cleaner look with Steam. Use The All Seeing eye for browsing servers. It's great.

and Barney, you could've invited the people you had contacs with to a IRC channel or something. MUCH easier than some shabby friends network or won chat.

You must of never played any of the beta Steam versions then. Friends worked fine, only reason it doesn't work atm is do to it having an overhaul.

Yes, I love steam. Only gripe with it I have is that it uses way too much resources than it needs.

But I never really touched WON. I just used Gamespy untill Steam came out.

Steam's a huge step upward from the outdated and overloaded WON. There's a program that runs old WON games called WON 2.0 or something like that on the net somewhere if you're so nostalgic.

Steam is so much better than WON in every way I feel.

Automatic patching means you get more updates automatically, so you almost never run into the problems of "You are running a different version than the server"

Mods, tools, games all accessed from one screen

Fast, easy to use server browser (never had a problem with it not keeping my favorites... are you sure you don't sleep walk and delete all of your favorites in the middle of the night?)

Ability to purchase games from the comfort of your home while enjoying a pizza... the true lazy-man's way




I say good riddance to WON, I never enjoyed it... It served it's purpose, and it's been replaced by a better system...

BTW, are you sure you aren't imagining some of these problems? Placebo effect? I mean, since you are so intent on hating Steam, maybe you are making some of these up and thinking they are real...

If you did the Steam Beta, you will realize Friends was AWESOME... Now they are doing a complete overhaul, and hopefully they will bring it back soon

I think I know whats wrong with the Favorites system..
You see when I save my favorites on steam on my desktop..then load up cs and go to my favorites they all arn't there and vice versa.
Thats what i've discovered anyway.
