So, here I am, done with this semester (and most importantly, finals week). I've finally decided to experiment more with my new Wacom tablet (it's a lowly Graphire3, BTW). To make a long-ish story short, Photoshop refuses to acknowledge the switch from Mouse to Tablet Mode via the Tablet control panel. Strangely, other applications (namely Painter) recognize the switch. Because of this, the cursor immediately skips a few pixels when I place the tip of the pen down to draw a line -- or, at least, I assume Mouse Mode is at fault.

All of the necessary drivers are installed and up-to-date. WTF is the dealy?

Oh, and to stay on topic, this is the result of my experiments in Painter. I just wish I had found the Layers window sooner. :dozey:

I don't know much about those programs, and I'm really just here to complement the picture. Good job.
It kinda has a dream-like quality to it. Hope you find your answers.

Still haven't figured out what's what. Right now I'm just trying to get my technique down. I'm also digging having an eraser that doesn't leave any residue behind. Anyway, I might as well get some more use out of this thread.

This is the progress I've made thus far.

great sketches there!

Yeah Photoshop seems to be a bit untrustworthy with tablets, different problems with different tablets, Painter seems pretty solid with them.. My advice, use Photoshop only for photoshopping, use Painter for painting or drawing, less hassle and slips.. though sometimes those slips and mistakes can make a mediocre pic look good, less perfect is always good.

I stick with photoshop, I dont seem to have any problems that OatmealMu discibed. altrough painter's brushes kick ass I am finding photoshop's layes way better, and photoshop's brushes are improving in each version.

nice pic! very loose, I love it

Photoshop does by far have the best layer and effect support, I'll completely agree with that. It's brushes are good now, but its got a long way to go to Painter's quality which are very nearly realistic (not quite, but very nearly) Painter 8 also made a big effort to improve the UI, which lets face it, stank to high heaven in previous versions right? :)

I like a mix of both, There's a particular style I can't get right in Painter but can in Photoshop and there are styles I can't get in Photoshop that I can in Painter. In a perfect world everyone would draw with both, swapping back and forth, easy enough so long as you don't make use of Photoshop's advanced layer effects, they don't transfer well into Painter :\

And thats the closest you'll get me admitting I was wrong to suggest only Painter to paint with :p hehe

It all comes down to wich program you prefer.

I liked how he got the sketch look in Painter, I can get a better looking pencil effect in Photoshop than I've been able to in Painter so far (using a default pattern to break up the line a little for that pencil on rough paper effect)

I wonder if part of the .dev site could have a place to upload users custom brushes for both programs, might be useful for those just starting out messing with either app?

Ah-ha! For whatever reason, Pen Mode seems to work in Photoshop now. What brought this on, I do not know. But it works...
