Won't even install "No Disc Inserted"

hey guys.. i had steam and just installed hl2 from steam put in my cd key but when i go to run it, it asks for the cd in the drive, why do i need it if i installed it from steam, and why won't my cdrom read the disc, do i HAVE to have a dvd rom, cus someone else doesn't have one and it auto ran the disc and its not a Dvd rom either, whats wrong and what should i do?

How have people installed the game without the cd/dvd... cus since i have it.. and it doesn't work.. how the hell can i get it without the discs?????????

HL2 by Steam is downloadable for free and involves a download that will take a lot of hours but can only by activated when you then pay for it by credit card. No disk or CD code is ever asked for.

HL2 by CD or DVD bought in the shops installs as usual but then asks to contact Steam for what should be a fairly short time. The game will ask for a CD or DVD code and will after that always ask for the disk before you play it.

A DVD should not work in a CD drive. Some countries like the UK are only getting DVD versions in the shops, others like the USA are getting both CD and DVD versions but the DVD one costs more.

It sounds like you downloaded the full game for free by Steam way but didn't activate it by credit card and then bought the CD/DVD version and Steam is trying to run it from the CD/DVD way instead.
