Good fun getting paid to drive all over the county to "convince" people who didn't turn in their census and good pay also. Too bad it'll last a month or two and no benefits. Time to save up and move from my shitty little burg for better opportunities once the job's complete. Any suggestions from those who live in Florida? Also, is there anyone else in the US working the Census?

Well, you have obviously got a degree in some form of medicine according to your username. So just open up your own clinic, doctor.

Hope all goes well for you, Dr. Demento.

You're an idiot Ravioli, he could easily have a PhD in a field completely unrelated to medicine.

Eejit is right. He could have a PhD in sewer control.

Also, I had a census dude find me at my workplace to have me fill out how old I was. Kinda funny.

Don't the rightwingers shoot census people.

As in the way of employment. I was thinking of moving to Jacksonville tbh.

Wrong state. "Disneyland" is in California.

Actually, it's in France. :p

But I meant Disneyworld, naturally.

What do you do?
What I do best...nothing. ha ha

No seriously though, IT stuff, office management etc. I have a few minor certifications including my Net+ and A+ plus 3.5 years of college. I had to drop out at the last minute cuz my tuition went dry so that sucked something major.

Thinking about applying at Convergys in the meantime in Valdosta GA, and then working my way up to the main office in Jacksonville FL. We'll see how it goes.

My dad's wife is doing the Census. Has a job as like a ringleader type. She was telling me next time it comes around, I should take the opportunity.

Later she told me to not do it. Apparently it's frustrating as hell, particularly due to the forms and shit you have to deal with.

I don't find the idea of walking door to door talking to people particularly enjoyable... especially when it's about something they may not care to talk about. That's why I probably won't be a Jehovah's Witness or a census worker.

Your dad's wife is a crew leader then. They get paid about 2 bucks more an hour than enumerators and don't have to go to people's houses. Much more responsibility though and much more paperwork. The government loves to be picky about it's paperwork too.

Everything must be written in all CAPS and every little box must have a perfect X in it. It was frustrating at first, but you get used to it. They say it's so there's no trouble with the scanners reading it incorrectly.

As for actually going to people's houses, it's not so bad here where I live. I wouldn't do this job in like say, NY New York though. A few grumpy old people but that's it. Most people aren't paranoid and hate the government around here nor are there any really shady neighborhoods. Most will happily oblige to take the interview.

So here goes by another day in the Census. (day 2 week 3 to be exact)

I'm liking this job more and more because I continue to gather Jerry Springer-ish stories to tell.

Take for instance a time I stumbled upon a couple in the midst of a domestic dispute. Arguing that so-and-so's husband shouldn't have divulged household information to me for fear that they'll lose government support for being truthful.

Raziaar, I really think you should give it a try. Watching people throw dishes at one another because they've hit rock bottom and had to move from some expensive house in the suburbs, to a dumpster of a single-wide, IS PRICELESS!!!

I felt sorry for the ex-husband though. He was actually kinda nice. His wife seemed like a gold-digging bitch. Seemed kind of odd to me why she would be driving up in a 09' Mustang and yet still be living in a crappy trailer. Unless she'll probably have to give that up too now that I've probably spoiled her illicit (probably) government funding. Though the Bureau claims they don't share anything outside of the agency.

No. I hate talking to people, especially at their own home. Plus I still have a couple more weeks of this stupid ass paper job I'm doing.

Do you ever have people protest the Census because it's "too personal"? I heard a news report about a woman refusing to fill out a Census form because it asked the names and ages of her children. Wow, just wow, I guess she thinks we have sexual predators in the government? ****ing moron.

EDIT: And if she isn't a moron, she's just way too overprotective.

It's her right to be wary. After all, government employees are capable of the same unjust acts as any other human being.

Furthermore, we're supposed to be a democracy here right? Stupidity or not.

True, however the same questions have been asked for years (correct me on this if I'm wrong, but I've looked at a census from 1940? I believe and the same information was gathered on there) and I don't think that her complaint should really be that publicised. It would be silly if people started thinking the same way she did and we had to change the census to protect the children.

The Census has been dumbed waaaay down since the 1940's though. Since the 80's even, there were like 40 questions per interview and on 2010's Census there are only like 10.

People can't be arsed to do it now, I'm guessing. Too much of an inconvenience to provide information to the government, especially big guv'mint >:l

Either way you look at it though, both sides win really. I get a paycheck, and the headcount and minimal household information people provide helps the Department of Commerce make informed decisions on how to allocate funding to states and communities. That's why it's so important for people to participate.

It's ultimately up to Congress and the President though to decide how to use the information that the Bureau provides and that's the rub alot of people have with the Census right now. That they don't like the Obama administration's initiative towards socialism, minority issues, etc. etc.

I've actually thought about applying at our local post office too though. Great pay, but hard as hell to get hired. Maybe the experience with maps and addresses I've been gaining with the Bureau will give me an edge.
