World in Conflict was one of the very best games on the PC last year, offering a thrilling real-time strategy experience that featured no base building or resource gathering. Instead, it focused on nothing but white-knuckle modern warfare as you used planes, artillery, tanks, infantry, and more to crush the enemy and crater the battlefield. Now if you make a really great RTS game, it almost goes without saying that the next thing you'll make is an expansion pack. That's what almost everybody does. But we caught up with Magnus Jansen, the lead designer of World in Conflict, and he told us that is most definitely not the case with Soviet Assault.

Was WiC as good as they say, I've been thinking of picking it up?
Regarding the 360 and PS3-

Since Massive is currently working on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, console gamers will now get this expanded campaign in the box when those versions ship. This expanded campaign is basically the new official World in Conflict campaign.

I loved the game. I'm glad that they are expanding the game. But I want them to carry on the original story on the side of the Allies. I don't care about the other side.

WiC was hands down one of the best strategy games ive ever played, it was so simple yet so damn awesome.

A continuation of the story would be nice, and make it longer this time. SP of WiC was too short.

God ive just had flashbacks of artillery fire everywhere, man those effects were awe inspiring.

I want to be able to lead the USSR.

And bring USA to it's knees.

Well that was the cliff hanger at the of the sp campaign. I want the story to continue. I hope this paves way a real expansion of the game. I want more sp story and they cna make it from both sides.

I guess the story would be in Asia or Europe now as they got rid of the USSR from USA mainland.

Plus I didn't know they gimped the AI in that way. That was a shame. I guess they didn't have time to do it properly because they could of added an extra difficulty level.

Later this year is too long! But man, I have a lot of respect for them: The whole not splitting the community in two - That's common sense right there. You don't see that from game developers that often.

What cliffhanger?

If the chinese are in the cliffhanger why aren't they in the expansion?? o_O

I thought it was boring, all you ever did was really just mass heavy tank rush if you were armor... actually it was heavy unit rushing for every role really.

But then again, I only ever played the demo.
Not to say it wasn't fun for the first few hours.

Wow... world in conflict looks amazing from the videos.

Agreed, apart from the "fun for the first few hours" part.

Fly in reinforcements... click on control point automatically killing any enemies on the way...

Boring.

The WiC I played was a heck of a lot more difficult than that. Me and 3 friends (all of us experienced at RTS) tried jumping in on a LAN game several times and fight the computer, and barely managed to beat the computer half the time. Like all games, if you turn the difficulty way down it gets pretty easy, but that doesn't seem like a fault.

And you think you have experienced the game just by playing the demo?

Boy, play with humans on the Internet, that's where the real (masochistic fun) begins.

The demo had multiplayer and I used heavy rushing tactics and managed to win most of the time, get enough points and then use artillery and all that stuff.
I was thinking of getting it but my online experience with it left me with the impression that it was a simple game of who can amass the most heavy units and get enough points to get the heavy ordinance.

But if I'm wrong then feel free to tell me how a good team actually works.

I agree with xlucidx I wasn't too impressed really although I only really tried the demo.

It's quite different, given the balance changes Massive introduced in seven patches. I don't know where to begin explaining how the system is different, but let me begin with the fact that, alone, you are extremely vulnerable to other powers and without any support from your friendly powers, you are going to die.

This game is built around teamplay, and teamplay doesn't mean "get shitload of heavy units" as it's the easiest way to get raped by the opposing team, especially if there are experienced commanders there. Without teamplay, lone wolves get picked off really easily, particularly if they are armour, as that power doesn't have good AA capabilites.

Let me illustrate this with an example: while in the beta you could order four heavy tanks at the beginning of the round and start raping alone, nowadays it's pretty much impossible, as teamplay tools (particularly map marking and calls for help) have been refined and as soon as your tanks are sighted and no AA cover is confirmed, you can be sure that at least three gunships are headed your way. This is not the case if you are supported by a player with anti-air vehicles and repair tanks, as he can cover your ass and repair any damage you sustain.

All this of course goes to shit if the enemy has enough TA points for tactical aids or if he manages to cut you off from control points (this is my favourite tactic on do_hometown, to destroy the bridges to both the northern part of the town and the sawmill. Or he might decide to airdrop infantry into a forest near you, which will pound your tanks until you get fed up and leave the area (or napalm bomb the forest, robbing friendly infantry of cover).

It's a really complex game in it's simplicity.

I pretty damn hope the PS3 version'll have support for keyboards.

Same here. With the Chinese entering the war, would this mean the US take the fight to the opposition.

Maybe even the European taking the fight to the opposition. Still I want the came central characters. They, to me were amazingly done.

Yeah, its was an RTS with some genuinely interesting characterization. Made you feel like part of a team because the other commands were both talking about what they're doing, and you can SEE them doing it.

That actually sounds cool, maybe I just played on crappy servers with crappy players.

I take it that the game is like BF2 in that aspect? You need a good team to really have a great experience?

Hmm Mikael Grizzly you've made me intrigued to try out the full version now.

Yes, a good team can make the experience extremely enjoyable.

You need to make extensive use of the marking system as well as VOIP, as they combined make the game much more enjoyable. Trust me, seeing Cobras/Mangustas fly at full speed to save your tanks from the monstrous Mi-24 is... priceless.

Of course, you can end on the wrong side of the barricade, for instance, when playing assault and attacking with a crappy team.... image the Omaha Beach, except the insertion point is constantly bombarded with artillery, airstrikes and tanks are rampaging through it.

And it is still possible to succeed!

Slightly off topic, but is there some way (a mod perhaps) to play the skirmish mode with bots?

You can do that anyway, start a mutiplayer sever and just select all bots.

Well not really a cliffhanger, but the Chinese are involved that opens India, Australia etc open to attack. Opens the war open now. Plus with how many Chinese there are. Will the good guys win?

Yes. The Soviet's final, desperate gamble to end the war has failed. With the men and Materiel lost during the failed invasion of the United States they have much less ability to hold back NATO's counter attacks in Europe and they're still under the impression that the US possesses the means to decisevly win any all out Nuclear War between the superpowers. And their Chinese allies, though numerous, are ill equipped and have virtually nothing in the way of force projection capability. And bearing in mind the now advantageous position enjoyed by NATO forces and the recent memory of the Sino-Soviet split the Chinese may well exit the war as soon as they entered it.

Anyway, a concurrent Soviet Campagin should be very interesting and I look foreward to it very much, I really loved the SP in WiC

I'm intrigued, might pick it up when it goes down to $20... too many other games to play through right now.

I'd hit it, the way everyone described it, it sounds amazing.

Now, debate time, PC or 360?

I have too find out the minimum requirements for the PC version, but don't want to wait for the 360 version.

I still have World in Conflict unopened sitting on my shelf. I have to get to that game sometime...

Hw lively is the multiplayer community? I remember getting Dawn of War Gold edition and the lobbies were completely deserted when I tried to play MP... it made me sad(and thats why I have no bought a new DoW game since then)

I found a good deal for the game online (but I am unsure of whether it's worth the cash or not.) How would you rate it compared to CoH?
