Wormhole time travel theory dealt a blow

"semi-classical" wormholes are the most desirable type for time travel because they potentially allow travellers to predict where and when they would emerge.

Wormholes entirely governed by the laws of quantum mechanics, on the other hand, would likely transport their payloads to an undesired time and place.

According to Leonard Susskind, of Stanford University in California, US, a time traveller would emerge "in the infinitely remote future or the infinitely remote past".

But building a wormhole with a throat radius big enough to just fit a proton would require fine-tuning to within one part in 10 to the power of 30. A human-sized wormhole would require fine-tuning to within one part in 10 to the power of 60.

"Frankly no engineer is going to be able to do that," said the York researcher.

Haven't got time to search for more detailed sources in the next couple of days (let's face it, the BBC sucks when it comes to explaining science), but it doesn't sound too good for wormhole enthusiasts :(

That is kinda like saying "ppfff no one needs more than 64k of memory" or "there will never be more than 4 computers in the world"

Is it? Please elaborate...

We seriously don't know enough to say what they are saying.

I'm going to try and find a better report than the BBC one after my exams are over, to try and make sense out of it.

The laymans terms they always use just confuse more.

But but...noooooo! Me and Frank have to save the universe from collapsing on itself :(.

The opening sequence of the BBC's new Doctor Who series shows the Tardis hurtling through a tunnel that suspiciously resembles a wormhole - although the Doctor's preferred method of travel is not known.

They just had to throw that one in there didn't they. I'd bet the second the Who fans saw that, they were posting on the newsgroups and forums in their thousands with in depth information on how the Tardis goes back and forth through time. :upstare:

Hmm... infinitely remote future and past? sounds cool. lol.

Eww... Terrible avatar Tr0n..

The wormhole theory is bull. Think about it.. What we thought we would never accomplish by now in the 80's (3D, super hardware, MP3 players, etc..) is easily accomplished.

That is why a 'human-sized' wormhole will be developed.

Guess you don't know much about my avatar do you? :p

Well...its a not a flag of a certain southern grouping of states, because its square and the lines are at the wrong angles :p

Are you implying that every post I make is an attempt to destroy Clarky's soul?

No.... I'm not that much of a bastard, surely?

Making a wormhole is a little different to making a coffee machine.

For a start a coffee machine is approximately tangible.

And we have that law about computer chips halving in size every 2 years... that predicted the whole digital revolution really.

Oh you're a bastard alright..tsk tsk.

Yeah, but you're only judging me on all the other bad things I did, right? :D

Of course...but you're still a bastard.

That's a likley conclusion....

Wanna tell ME I have a terrible avatar? Go ahead, boy. I'll **** you up. :p

I tend to agree that it is not the place of science that something is conclusively impossible. I think science can only prove a positive theory and not a negative one, like "Something will never be possible." Pfft.

Well I like this one...the mooninites will return...just not for a long time.

People are already noticing it... :D

Go ahead try it.. See what I do..

*Shamrock runs and dances provoking Steve_O and Tr0n

This "fine tuning" cannot be predicted for something we can't "rough tune" yet. I don't see the point in this article other than to sell media.

Who knows, we may end up creating wormholes the size of which varies dependant on a certain level of gamma radiation being pointed at them or something.

The bottom line is that they don't know what they're on about.

My physics professor at Berkeley never gave much weight for wormhole-time travel capability theory.

I just love how people do this. Make conclussions before they CAN even try *sigh*
