With all the money that I got for Christmas, I was thinking what I should do with some of it, and then I remembered that Win7 was out and maybe I should get it.

I'm currently running Windows Vista Ultimate, and is it worth paying 150$ to upgrade to Windows 7? Like, are there any major reasons or new features in Win7?

Thanks,
:afro:

Windows 7 is overheating my GPU.Killed the last one.Do I regret installing it ? YES.

Basically, no. It works a lot nicer in a lot of ways, but nothing is of concern when sticking to Vista (right now).

Are you sure you didn't just overclock it too much?

Yes. It's working quite better for me than Vista did. Haven't had one problem so far.

I'm likely going to upgrade as well. I definitely liked what I saw when using the RC.

You will need the drivers for your monitor and other devices.

For example, there are no Win 7 drivers for my CRT monitor, so I'm stuck with the default refresh rate, and it's flickering.

If you already have Vista, it's more like a service pack than a new OS by way of how you interact with it, no?

I like Win7 over Vista but it isn't because of function really. I don't think I would have bought Win7 if I had missed the Pro Upgrade deal where the price was cut in half back in June. I'm running 64bit now while the Vista I had was just 32bit business OEM for $10 through my college. I would think about going Win7 if I was on XP.

Fixed. Secret reason: They're the same OS.
thanks for the tip, but I don't think I have that option:
Windows 2000
Windows 98
Windows Me
Windows XP Home Edition
Windows XP Professional

:(

It came with an old computer (though it was barely used), so there's no chance they are going to update the driver.

I'm only using this monitor because my Samsung CRT started getting pretty dim in its old age. If I had the extra money, I'd have a different monitor.

Anyway, when I get my graphics card (any day now I hope), I'll probably be able to force it, regardless of Win7's new refresh rate protection (no longer can select resolutions and rates unless they are in the table for your monitor) No driver, no table.

The HP driver seems to install, but then at the end I see a pop-under saying it failed or whatever.

If it's the 'I'm not sure if this installed well, maybe I can try again' message, just override it. I got those too and the drivers still worked.

I don't have my monitor drivers installed and I can adjust refresh rate of my 17" CRT to 85Hz+. Odd that it won't let you. (in win7)
It's listed as Generic PnP monitor rather than ViewSonic P75F+ (I have had the drivers installed before under XP).

yeah, it's listed as generic.

The only option I saw was 60 Hz, but you're making me think. I'll play around with it some more later.

I really need to get some glasses before I get a new monitor, so it could be a while. Also need a bigger cage for my Iguana. Poor bugger.

There's two people in this thread using CRT monitors?

One 17" CRT monitor at that? What the hell people?

Yeah, and I'm glad I waited. That means I'll get a better one. =P

Seriously, the monitor I wanted was like $800, and now it's like $200. Also, Samsung has LED backlighting now in some of their models, so I think that should last many times longer, and I think it's brighter and uses less energy as well.

What size are you running?

A 17" CRT is like a 16" LCD....and here I am with a 24", and before that I was running a 19" LCD since like '03.

So much suffering.

Yeah, I'm not happy with it. I'm only using this monitor because my 20" CRT faded badly after so many years. I was only using that because my brother gave it to me and because I didn't have the extra money for an LCD.

I've been wanting a ~24" widescreen LCD for years. CRT flickering hurts my eyes (in fact I've heard recently that it damages your eyes), so it's no longer just a matter of preference; it's a health issue.

I just upgraded to windows 7, and I have to say, it was relatively easy to get used to, and VERY easy to set up. Even easier than my experiences with XP. I love the new interface as well. Very stylish. I'd say go for it. I'm playing crysis on higher settings with better frame rates than XP. VERY impressed.

I agree with this. I can run Crysis in DX10 at 1680x1050 with all settings at very high with 30-40fps on average. Compared to XP when everything was high and I had to run in 1280x800 to be able to get an acceptable frame rate.

I want to give Win7 a little more time for drivers to catch up etc before I put it on my gaming rig (which is still running XP) but I'm thinking about putting w7 on my laptop once I get back to school since I can get it for $30 or something. I like what I've seen of it so far.

Almost all Vista drivers work on Windows 7.

Win7 users , check your GPU temps please and post them here.

A stable low 46C. Dual monitors, lots of windows open. GTX 275 (stock overclocked).

73C load (F@H)
not sure about idle.

I don't use my CRT any more. I have a 17" LCD from 2005. D:
I used to have my CRT with dual monitors (have 2 of them). For what I did it was better than 1 large screen.

^^ WTF is with my computer GPU !? I get 83 under full load and 70 idle !??? I didn't tamper with it in any way , its like a month old !!!

I had this with my old 9600GT, replaced it in the end with the GTX260 and the temps are as they should be. I think it was because it was an OC model.

dadomb - if you're paying, don't bother paying the extra $120 or so for Ultimate edition... most people won't need anything more than Home Basic or Premium... see here for a comparison of the different versions.

As far as Vista vs 7 - I've been using 7 since the RC with no problems. I've heard some people have had issues with certain mobile broadband cards, but that's it. Nearly all hardware manufacturers have windows 7-specific drivers out by now, and for those that don't, the Vista drivers generally work fine.

While as someone pointed out earlier, there's not a lot of difference in functionality for a casual or gaming user, it is most definitely a superior operating system. I'm a software engineer, so I spend at least 9-10 hours a day on my computer, and I could definitely not go back to Vista now. I'd say it'd be worth an upgrade.

lol at paying for Win 7. I told you guys how to get a LEGIT (looks at unzero) and FREE copy of Windows 7 ultimate but did you guys listen? NOOOOO

enjoying my FREE copy of Win 7 that replaced my FREE copy of Win Vista ultimate

also Ultimate edition isnt worth it. you just get the language packs and a few themes for free. not worth it

Also this, If you're a student. Tis how I got my 64-bit professional upgrade. I'd say it's worth it if you have the money to spare and a computer which could run Windows Vista flawlessly.
