Would my GEForce 4 MX 4000 be able to run HL source and CS source smoothly?

define "smoothly"

it will play perfectly fine if thats what your asking. it will play at low-med settings.

It will run smooth, but you'll have to force dx7 mode. The only really annoying thing about dx7 mode is the fading out of objects... but that can be fixed by a couple of console commands.

I was running it on that before I upgraded (year(s) ago) to my Gefoce5700FX.

In replay to 5700FX

i have one of those and i was wondering if you were thinking if it was time to upgrade because i have one and am thinking of waiting until dx10 cards get cheaper or getting a 7000 series card

can you elaborate on the commands please thanks

When you have the game and got it installed, what you can do is make an autoexe file and type in these commands.

mat_dxlevel 70
r_screenfademaxsize 0
r_screenfademinsize 0
cl_detaildist 1600
cl_detailfade 800

If this autoexec stuff doesn't make sense to you read this,

http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_7.html

This has all the info about how to correctly create an autoexec with a whole bunch of other HL2 tweaking tips. Very comprehensive. Give the whole thing a read if you have time.

I play on a nividia fx 5500 and I can play on all settings fine without any lag.so Id say you could run it on med-low settings and be fine

No, it will not.
You'll get about 40FPS on CS:S, if you want to play on large public servers you'll get 9-25FPS.
Of course, if you stay with about 20people MAX, you'll get about 30-40FPS Average on LOWEST settings.
Make sure you are backed up with 512MB-1GB of RAM or else that card will become extremely slow when changing levels.

Related: It's not going to be pretty.

It'll run, but it won't be pretty.

Right about now I'd recommend a 6600GT. Buy this, and it'll be the last AGP card you need. It'll even run Ep1 on my machine at 1024x768.

A 7600GS AGP would be a better choice. It can be had for $99 after a MIR and is faster. HL2 Ep.1 runs @ 1680x1050 w/ all settings at max and 2xAA, averages 40-50fps with my old Athlon Xp 2600+ and a gig of ram.

Thanks...
No. Probably not. Get a job. First you get the money. Then you get the power. Then you fork out for a graphics card that was not around when Moses was, and stop asking stupid questions.

Lol.

Mean.
My FX5200 gets the job done. I could perhaps tweak up some higher setting but my frames suffer o well.

Hah, it'll run it, but not smoothly.

...like I said before.
