Ok, I've got:

Pentium 4 Processor
D865PERL Motherboard
GeForce FX 5600
512MB RAM

If I replaced the 512MB RAM with 2x 1GB sticks, and replaced the 5600 with a 6800GT, would this be good to play modern games at HIGH graphics?

For only a few hundred more you could have a whole new PCI-E system that is much more powerful, so I wouldent recommend it.

What processor do you have? Can you be more specific? and no you would need a faster system then that to run modern games at high graphics.

Chances are, if he got a new mobo, his current processor would be incompatable with his older processor and even his RAM. Then the increased cost of a PCI-E card over AGP...

Well if he gets new RAM and a GFX card he would need a new CPU and MOBO and be able to run new games well. If he got the RAM and GFX card for an AGP system he would need to upgrade everything in a year or 2 and then he would need a whole new system and the RAM/GPU would be useless and relatively new purchases. Also AGP cards are more expensive for the same power.

I would rather spend more money for a great computer then throw money at an old system and get only a little bit of life from it. He could always sell the old machine.

Yea, but a new machine would cost like 1800-200 dollars, I got a thread in the general off-topic thing, buying either a new computer or dirtbike, and I was thinking of upgrading my system a bit so I could get both...

$1300 -- even less now. That's what I got mine for 5 months ago. Runs Oblivion maxed out @ 1280x1024 and 2x AA at around 30 FPS. Truthfully though I'd wait until the DX10 cards come out.

Just save it in this case. DX10 is close, as well as Vista. Might cost a packet, but you can start saving now.

If your gonna get a new mobo get 3 512 sticks so youl have 2gb total. Unless your ram now isnt a 512 stick then go with all 512 sticks. They run faster in dual channel if you can that.

yes. yes it would. dont listen to everyone else. you dont NEED buy a brand new PC and spend lots of cash just to play modern games with a fair framerate.

if you really want a machine that will play EVERY GAME AT UBER SETTINGS AND FPS then go ahead and get an really expensive pc system, but i dont think thats exactly what you meant when you said high settings, throw your cash at something else

If you have like a Pentium IV 2ghz, then no. If it's 3ghz or higher, then maybe.

^ that too. you didnt specify which penty u got.

mines a 3ghz one, but i got an arctic cooler and clocked it between 3.6 and 3.8 :) which eliminates any bottleneck

when is direct 10 coming out and what do modern computers need to do to upgrade to it/

^not yet. need a direct x 10 graphics card. which doesnt exist yet. youll have to wait. when it comes out you'll know about it!

aww. it wont pull it back too much. it still higher than all the min/ reccomended specs for latest games! u can get a decent cooler at a low price! like an arctic cooler and clock it at 3ghz

My P4 2.8 GHZ X800GTO 2 gig of ram runs everything on High

Besides BF2 because the new patch fubar'd me..I WAS on high settings
Obvlivion, no..but pretty close.
HL2 yes, max EVERYTHING at 40 fps.

My comp can max out HL2 except the models are at "medium" instead of high, thats it though.
