Let's say you and your wife found out your baby was going to be born with down-syndrome or perhaps another mental disablement. The option to abort is now. Would you abort it? Why or why not?

probably not, i know a couple with a down syndrome child and they couldnt be happier, BUT they found out after he was born(complication at birth)

ofcourse they were terribly upset when this happened but they love their child no matter what and their child is perfectly happy and a great kid...

i dont think i could do it myself, i'd be racked by guilt..

I'd only opt for abortion if the child would suffer immense pain during / after birth. If it would be a perfectly healthy Down-child, I'd be against abortion.

No, I wouldn't. My aunty has down syndrome and she's lovely, with a good quality of life.

nah i probably wouldnt. even tho i know this one guy and hes pretty cool.

My initial urge would probably be yes. But in the end, I don't think I could.

As with most of these kinds of hypotheticals, you'd need to experience it say for sure.

QFT

that is the only answer

I probably would, think of how much he would get made fun of in school. He'd have no friends.....I see it all the time at my school, kids making fun of the mentally handicapped. :|

Wow, you'd deny a child life because some idiots will make fun of him/her at school? Anyway, they have special schools where children with these conditions are looked after.

The fact that you're still in school really shows on this one. I was the same way, I couldn't see past it.

well, thankfully most people with downs can attend regular school (with a one to one care giver of course) ...at least in canada

btw people just to let you know ..I was a teacher for 7 years ...most of my students had Downs syndrome .....so I'm watching you, carry on :)

at my school they have a really good program for the handicapped. something that really pissed me off to the point were i wanted to just go up to them and bitch slap them was when a few of the freshmen were approched by a guy named Harvey (he was in car accident that made him handicapped, he knows whats going on but just cant speak, walk or talk) he just wanted to say hi to them (he has a keyboard that he types on) and they ran away like he was the boogyman or something.
i just felt so bad for him, and the way that i got to know him was my 9th grade english teacher introduced him to us. i just pisses me off to no extent when people treat mentally handicapped people like trash

Thats what i was trying to say, they might get made fun of so much that maybe they wouldnt want to live. Everyone here makes fun of them here.

well they might have some friends, and i couldnt take a life of a baby no matter what is wrong with it

At the end of the day School is a very small part of our lives, again should you deny them life because they may or may not be miserable for a few years? Even if they are miserable from being made fun of at school, it's not their fault for being who they are. So should they be punished?

Aborting a child for social issues, imo, is wrong, 100% of the time.

just a question...are nerds, goths, freaks, etc. not made fun of at school?

Not really. Of course it matters the school you go to...the high school I went to...no one really made fun of you because you was a goth or nerd or whatever.

If push came to shove, i'd just opt for adoption.

But no, I wouldn't abort a perfectly healthy baby, unless it was my wifes decision. And still, i'd fight it.

I'm all pro choice and all, but I still don't think abortion is the right thing to do.

And yeah, i'd need to be in the situation to know.

i'd eat it, no use in wasting a baby

I considered making that kind of callous comment, but I decided I'd rather not be the dick in this topic.

You are a far greater man than I.

I am against abortion in almost ever cast, this is not an exception.

it depends where you live...maybe in the US they are all take care of but not in less developed countries! here supporting yourselfe is tough having aa child with special needs would kill you and consequentialy him/her too! unless you're rich you wouldn't get along well!

in this case yes i'd probably go for abortion...not being egoistic but who would care for him/her if i couldn't even care for myselfe?? and there are not many foster parents here, let alone the ones who are willing to adopt a handicapped!

there are too many factors here to decide that easily!

let me tell you something...our nation is dying out, very very few (newer) families have more than one kid...hell...lot's of them don't even have kids...it's becoming expensive even to have a normal child!
the handicaped would be really miserable, not only because they would be laughed at, because they would lack even the basic things!

this would be one of the toughest decisons to make!!

from a realistic point of view it would be better for you and the child, to make an abortion! moraly speaking....i don' know!?!? :(

no, I think youd love your kid for what it is not for what it could be.

someone had to do it

I have thought about this and rather than giving a knee jerk reaction, I thought I would be able to give a definitive answer.
The simple truth of the matter is I simply don't know.
I would not condemn somebody for aborting a Downs syndrome child, nor would I love a child any less for having this condition.
I suppose my answer is, I really don't know and heaven forbid I would ever be faced with such a decision.
I simply don't know.

No. Downs people are some of the happiest people on the planet, and as long as we, the parents, were to take care of him/her, so the burden is not on the state, then I'd have no problem with keeping the child.

Twice.

If this is true, then by no means would I abort the child. On the other hand, if it was essentially assured that the child would have a terrible life full of exclusion and emotional torment, then the answer would probably be yes.

yes they're mostly happy

the majority of parents cant take care of them without state support ..a school/therapy etc usually averages $2000 - 3000 a month and can go as high as $10,000. Not too mention that after their parents are dead they need to have some way of sustaining themselves ...many arent high functioning enough to have a job much less one thta pays a living wage

I take Maddox's position. I am anti-abortion, but pro-baby killing.
