I saw this while browsing another forum I thought it was a great topic, to talk about. Lets say if you were having a child, and you took some test and the test said your child was going to have down syndrome/autistic/cerebral paulsey(sp?) would you get an abortion or would you give it a chance at life?

Please dont start a flame war.

Probably an abortion.

But it's really impossible to say unless I was actually in the situation...and I was a women.

Abortion. I'd rather "put the child down" before it's born, rather than have it suffer through a fraction of a normal life and die a slow and painful death.

If I was a woman that is.

[edit] Just remembered what all those diseases are. I think they're all different forms of mental retardation, so now I'm not so sure. If it was a terminal disease then yes...

I think I'd go for an abortion... with extreme feelings of guilt, though. ;(

(Mr-Fusion, your signature is evil. :p STOP REMINDING ME!)

under no effin' way would i get an abortion; under any and every circumstance it's a way of killing a poor, defenseless child

Giving birth through my wang would hurt immensly!111

I dunno what I'd do...

Put it up for adoption maybe?

Yeah, Abortion, but then again you really aren't torturing the child since if he's born with the problem it wont know any other way of life, but still.

It depends how many months it would have gestated.

I'd say no. I don't think abortion is ever justified, and besides, those tests are not 100% accurate. In fact, my aunt was told that her baby would have down syndrome, but it turns out he didn't. So, you never really know for sure. Better to just give the child a chance.

Im for abortion, why bring more unwanted children to this world than we already have? But i admit i would feel a guilt if my girlfriend did it. But here in Sweden its legal and some people dont take it very seriosly..i have had sereval girl friends(when they was around 14) who have done an abortion and to them it was like nothing ever happened..

I think abortion is justified if you arent ready for the child or you are too young and such.

I'd suggest an abortion if it was planned depending on what the disease was. If he or she would live a life of constant suffering or a slow, painful, or early death, then yes. If it's just mental retardation then just accept the child for who they are.

Besides, you might have the next rainman. ;)

Hell I aint havin no retard kid. I want a kid that I can do stuff with not whipe its ass through life. Sorry if thats really mean but its the truth lol

E-Bay !

No really, I saw the other day on discovery a girl woth 2 heads, do you think she would have a happy life ?
I made my point.

Why haven't I received a birthday E-mail ?

Starts a thread about abortion and asks people not to flame...

Anyone else see anything wrong here?

everyone has different views on abortion, so you can't expect the conversation to stay civil for long. if you argue that abortion is immoral, then shouldn't you also say that using contraception is also immoral?

I don't think I would be able to give a proper life to the child. I would not be a good enough parent and I would want it to have a wonderful life, rather than be a (sad to say it) burden on society for no good reason.

So yeah - abort it.

i'd let my wife decided... and if i were my wife, i would... i do not want my child to suffer, i know God gave me that child for a certain reason and i decline, you hear that? I DECLINE! I WILL NOT TAKE YOUR TESTS YOU... TEST NAZI!!

/me waves fist angrily at God

(j/k God, i love you! :D)

I would discuss it with "my wife" (i am not married) and with the doctors and we would all decide what best way to approach the matter. But i would be under the opinion that it would be better for the child to be aborted as early as possible rather than live with such discomfort and problems for the rest of their lives. It would also depend on how well and capable me and "my wife" would be supporting a child with serious mental and physical problems, if we're rich and can afford the proper care, then i would more less likely to want an abortion as if i was living in some £10,000 council flat in some run down neighbourhood.

you would only have a 2 week window in which to decide

If it was a child born with something wrong with it, that required me to spend the rest of my natural life looking after it, then I would probably go for an abortion, because frankly that wouldn't be fair on me.

If it was a baby that had something wrong with it, but it could still lead its own productive/independant life then I'd want it to live.

Who would? In the UK the latest a child can be aborted is 24 weeks (but they're talking about reducing it to 22 weeks considering the number of children born at 24wk's surviving). A woman goes for two scans also.

yes but the test to find out if it has downsyndrome can only be taken at a certain time. All mothers have this test, and they give you a set of odds....it's not percise. If your odds are high you can have a test to be absolutely sure ...but their is a 1 in 200 chance of a miscarriage

I just went through this with my wife last year

Yeah, its not like retards are worth loving right.

yakuza if you are referring to me then I must inform you that I was a special needs teacher for 7 years, most of my students had downsyndrome.

This is a touchy topic, I mentioned something similar earlier and nearly got banned from the forums - but so many people are saying abortion in here also so it's not uncommon thinking.

ya but you deserved it ...didnt you recommend euthanasia?

No, termination before birth is what I suggested, and you all called me a nazi or something. Course it's not my decision to make or anything and i'd have a very hard time deciding if it was my kid.

I may have compared you to Joseph mengela, yes, but I stand by my assessment

:)

having known many many children with all the above conditions?

Heck no.

They learn slower, or differently, but some are quite brilliant, and even learn to live a normal life. There is NO test that can tell the sevarity of the condition either. it might be so minute that it's not noticable.

in addition, based on pre-birth test, they can't tell jack shit what condition the child will be born with. I've known parents that were told their child would be born with severe mental retardation, downs syndrome, and numerous other problems, and the kid was fine.

And I also think Autism is something that happens AFTER birth, look it up sometime, there are hundereds of links that show Autism being caused by having to many imunizations at once. give a few week old kid 6 imunizations at one time, yea...thats GOTO be good for it. (Again, knowing parents whos kid was fine, up until they had all those imunizations..bah)

And a quick answer to everyone before they start trashing my before statements:
a close relative of mine has downs syndrome. Thankfully, her parents didn't abort her. She's 12 now, rides horses, solo. competes in the special olymipcs as an equestrian, english style. Plays the piano, (as in, knows every scale, all the major/minor coords). Makes her own breakfast/lunch, cleans her own room, emptys the dishwasher, sets/clears the table, puts up to 500 peice puzzles together, reads fairly well, phonetically, not sight reading.
Doctors said she'd be a vegtible. hardly. Shes healthy, active, and involved. Of course not ALL cases of downs syndrome are this minute, nor this severe. I've seen both ends of the spectrim. But they allways have their own personality, are generally more loving then most other people, ALL have a good sence of humor.

Until you've been around them for awhile, you think it's a retardation. then you relize that those people that call them special, are exactly right. They learn differently, perhaps slower, all have special needs. But in the end, they are still just kids.

I actually agree with most of what you said A2597. Autism usually doesnt manifest itself till the age of 2. All the tests cant tell you how severe the disability will be. I've met autistic children who vary from a pre-vegatative state to you wouldnt notice the difference between a "normal" child until you saw a particular behaviour (like stimming)

No, no it was general. I think abortions are one of the most self centered expressions next to suicide, in the sense of todays standards.

And I get the feeling that a child that isn't perfect by todays standards is better off in the wast basket, before ever having a chance.

I mean Jeez, I know a lot of "normal" people more worthy of the waste basket.

Nice Post, A2597. But dont rant on me with not knowing what Autism is I know someone who has Autism and they can be very violent/demanding at times. I know the parents probably wouldn't have killed him before birth considering the dad is a doctor, but they were having to pay like 5,000 or so dollars a month for his health care. Then the kid went to college and he hit some guy becuase the guy said something to him that was negative, now the medical bills have went up, and he's near being expelled.

Yes you never know what if test the could be true or not, but I dont know if I could take the chance of allowing my kid to live a life where he gets chastised because he/she is special. I don't know if I could live with killing a child, so my decision would probably be no abortion. ;/
