Hi,
I'm just wondering if you would play a mod that uses 2d sprites for characters instead of 3d models. The world would still be 3d of course..
For an example of a game like this, you could check out Ragnarok Online.
http://www.ragnarokonline.com

If there is enough interest, I may consider starting some mod with these features, check my site for examples for my sprite work.

and there should be a poll to vote for this question...

hey a game is a game,, if it's good enough, the graphics won't be so relevant

I would too. I doubt how that would be a mod though, considering that its pretty easy to program 2d game straightforward.

I guess you could do a 2d/3d thing, or maybe use the rendering capabilities of source to augment your 2d mod.

I would love to play a 2d action game on the source engine, to be honest I was considering making some sprites as models myself if I ever got free time. I have started playing Doom coop on the school comps and I have no prob with the graphics, its only the controls that arnt good.

If the gameplay was good enough to warrant it.

How would they ragdoll though? :p
Actually, I have no problem with sprite characters so long as their animations are good.

Well, I'm not sure if sprites would adapt too well to an environment that relies heavily on 3D, and shooting.

If you keep the perspective the same throughout the game, and make it a Japanese-inspired RPG, it should work. But, as a first-person shooter, the sprites would tend to 'follow' your camera, and look like cardboard cutouts.
