I just switched from a 680W PSU to a 1200W PSU and WOW all of the sudden everything is running really good. Has anyone else ever upgraded their PSU and gotten better frames?

can't say I have... as far as I can tell PSUs either do what they need to do, or they don't and you have to get a bigger one.

I just bought a new chassis fan and my performance jumped 133% ..I can now play Crysis on super-duper ultra high and get 165fps outdoors

Pfft, I just plugged in a 2gig thumb drive into my USB Hub and now I can play crysis, gears of war and UT3 all at the same time with 130fps.

I installed the Flash plugin for Firefox and now I get 450fps in Crysis with ray-tracing on.

I bought an Alienware and I got a decrease in performance.

Anywho, its like saying you got an oil change and now your car is faster...

That like saying you bought a cigarette lighter for you car and it goes faster now :P

soo....i'll be the first NOT to flame you on your post. i suppose your cpu and gpu were both underpowered w/ your old psu but with your new one they're getting enough juice to run properly. i assume you're noticing very MINOR improvments? anywho yeah

Depending on how much power his machine was pulling (I doubt it got anywhere near the 400-500 watt range) his PSU had a max of 600watts. That does not mean it supplies anywhere near that amount all the time. Also comes the point of multiple 12v rails. Some power supplies have split rails and will heavily load one and leave the others alone doing nothing.

The story here kiddies is to buy a Delta power supply. http://www.delta.com.tw/product/ps/sps/sps_main.asp

Delta PSUs are the type Intel and other OEMs use. They are the most reliable PSU around but lack things like cable management. If you need that go for a Corsair 500/600watt unit.

Wait... 1200Watt PSU? WTF?

Are you powering an electric car with your computer or what?

i think someone who thinks they know computers was like "yeah 1200 watts is a hell of a lot of power! it's gonna beef your computer up hella fast!"

I have a 2500W PSU for sale, you could run five instances of WoW at the same time and get five times more loot. PM me.

I have a magic PSU for sale. It can power anything you want it to, and it's shiny. It also grants you 3 wishes.

Usually components either are getting the right power or not and the PC crashes. Which is why getting a better PSU may help a PC reach higher clock speeds when OCing.

It's a big stretch when referring to a 680 watt PSU but I can see the GPU not going at full speed if it wasn't getting enough power. I know they can if you forget to put the 6-pin GPU power in. Wonder if the PSU was not running right or if it was really warm (they drop how much power they put out and how efficient they are as they heat up).

That would be the only situation I could see it happening. And it has happened to me before. The pcie connector on the PSU had a loose wire and I know at least with Nvidia you'll get an alert window popping up telling you the auxiliary connector is not plugged in, etc. Not sure if ATI's drivers have this or not.

I thought this thread was going to be about World of Warcraft.

You can blame noobs for misinterpreting the term "WoW" as a cool way to say "wow"

This is the second time I've made a post pointing this out on hl2.net. Very sad indeed.

I just bought a new thumb drive.........oh this is getting old isn't it?

I installed an 8800gtx and suddenly everynight three gorgeous 18 year old women come into my room to rub my feet, scratch my back, and suck my cock.

:D

:D

For the price of a 8800GTX, I expect Nvidia to send you three naked women to perform fellatio on you.

My PSU is a PC so it is like I have a PC inside my PC's PSU's PC.

Or it should at have a built in fireworks display option that entertainingly incinerates your PC case when you click an option.

I inserted a CD into my drive once, and sparks flew out of the case. :D :rolling: :D :rolling: :D

I'm doing it wrong, aren't I?

I have to agree with Ennui. Stability and a better PSU go hand in hand, but better performance? I call shenanigans

Actually, it could have been a bad cable on the PSU that made him have degraded performance. I just found a recent problem with my computer and it went away when I switched cables going to the GPU. I think that the cable was dirty on some of the connectors and forced the GPU into low power mode.

I bought a new video card, now my mom punches me in the face.

Oh wait it makes sense, I used her credit card.

Well, in the brief time period while making my Half Life Movie/Getting a 1200W PSU, and my computer going capoot, I can certainly say WOW at Portal and the Orange Box in general. My computer always went jittery at the
fire pit[spoiler/] in Portal, and then it didn't. Well, when my computer is back up again, I'll enjoy it.
