Wow - I never realised that CS:S was so unpopular

I was looking at the stats at
http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=stats&
and if you click "View detailed statistics by game" you get a breakdown of individual game statistics.

Code:
Game players servers minutes/month
Counter-Strike 137,871 82,310 6.302 billion
Counter-Strike: Source 27,325 31,794 1.921 billion

Now I know players and server statistics will change a lot but from the minutes per month stat you can see that CS is played almost 3.5 times more than CS:S.

There is a multitude of reasons why CS would be played more than CS:S but even so I didn't expect such a difference.

I guess CS1.6 players don't use Xfire.

There is only one reason why I play CS:S over CS1.6: it doesn't look like ass. And the grenades aren't watermelons. So that makes two.

What the hell are cstrike_beta and Half-Life 2 Deathmatch Pro?

Yea, there CSS beats 1.6 by a long shot on the xfire top10 most played games, I suppose 1.6 players just use friends (wich are better integrated into 1.6) or nothing.

The graphics are alot better in CSS thats is SO true, but also remember that the sounds are exellent compared to the sh*t that u hear in 1.6.

That made me lol.

people bitch about 1.6 being better then css so much i hate it. i prefer css overall especially for graphics. they just cant handle the change at all.

Their pc's just cant handle the graphics is all. For those who can and still prefer 1.6 over CSS just a small minority.

While it's certainly a dicouraging factor I don't think the strain on computers is really the main reason. A lot of people really do just like 1.6 more, apparently source is inconsistent needs bugs ironed out etc., personally I think it's fine but whatever. 1.6 still has a much bigger and more established competitive scene, which draws a lot of people.

Any actual 1.6 players have comments on this?

It's 1.6 that's full of bugs. I play both regularly. 1.6skill is all about knowing all bugs and illogical stuff, and knowing the way around them, exploiting them and/or using them to your advantage.

Wasn't peak time for CS:S, its generally about half less than 1.6

I'm a CS1.6 player, over CSS. Some reasons being. I find it much more fun. (the guns and uses of grenades & flashbangs). CSS doesn't have that feel for me.

Someone also made the comment it 'looks like ass' No one honestly cares what the game looks like, it's so much fun still to play. Nearly 140,000 people agree! Also I use the CS Realism pack - it looks equal to Source (everything but the maps of course).

I think a huge reason is that CS 1.6 runs better on average machines better because it's dated and well patched & updated. I don't have any serious gripes with CSS at all, it runs fine for me, it's just not the same fun experience. It feels easier, with less emphasis on aiming, alien recoil and a lack of consistency. These changes appeal to some people though.

I feel CSS v CS 1.6 debates are pointless, choose your game and stick with it, the communities are allowed to make separate choices. Stick with what you enjoy most.

I've just restarted playing Condition Zero and I had forgotten how great it was.

For me, it's neither. And you have to admit: it does look like ass.

I'd prefer a FLANNNNNNNNNNNNNN...
Hehe, you see the double connection! Few people would :p

The maps do look hugely inferior compared to the CSS ones, definitely. And CS 1.6 on it's own looks very dated indeed, so skin packs, like the Realism pack really brings it into it's own, and makes it great for me.

Also, can someone tell me the CSS map with the underground tunnels, a warehouse & a boat which you bomb at one end is called? I played it this week, and it's truly shocking...

I'm the same, I enjoy 1.6 because it just feels like a fun game, CS:S seems so slow and dreary. I have a problem with CS:S and custom maps, too-I hate the normal rotation, it's just dumb after three hours of the same goddamn maps over and over again. I am an avid lover of custom map servers, and yet because of the Source engine being so new, all the maps take me like 20mins to download, and even then somehow it's not even fun. You can't see how long it will take because as soon as the little loading bar gets to the end IT STARTS OVER AGAIN. You also can't cancel out the map download until it's done downloading and you join the server, which defeats the purpose of a concel button in the first place. I think 1.6 is way more fun to play with friends, CS:S to me just seems to be either losers who are generally extremely angry people who take the game really, really seriously and choose "professional playing" over a ****ing social life; or just 12-year old retards who just bitch and bitch and bitch. I almost but not quite prefer dod 1.3 over cs 1.6 because of the general maturity level-everyone uses the mic, everyone plays as a team, everyone has a great personality and sense of humor. 1.6 is getting close to there, but there are still some 'l33t h4x0rz' who haven't quite moved over to raging 12 year olds in CS:S yet.

EDIT-It amuses me too sometimes, since I remember staying up all night with friends 'modding out our 1.6, and now everyone's so concerned with the stupid graphics, while here I am looking on CSB (well, FPSB, now) for the original 1.5 skins, with the original leet krew and all, to replace the retarded, big-headed CZ models. I love the way 1.6 looks, far more so than Source. Sure, things like Black Mesa Source look mind-bogglingly good compared to the originals, and I can't wait, but cs is something I attribute to the past and the good times I had on that game, ya know? Err, yeah.

I've just restarted playing Condition Zero and I had forgotten how great it was.
Yeah, it is pretty good. It's like a 1.6 without the annoying players and bugs. Good stuff, but I don't see a lot of people playing it nowadays.

I think 1.6 plays terrible.

I just can't stand those animation. D:

That strongly depends on the server you join. Try a few more servers maybe? Although there seems to be an awful lot of servers like those you describe. I only have about 3 servers in my favorites as a matter of fact, as most are indeed winy - or completely quiet, and rotate dust2 on a 24/7 scheme.

Cs 1.6 is alot better, it feels more genuine a game.

I don't care for graphics at all and will elaborate later.

You're right, animations ruin the entire game.

OH HAHA!

Sorry if I can't stand animations where body parts move with no inbetween frames making shooting people difficult.

I play 1.6 over source and i will continue you too until CPL stops doing 1.6 and that it dies out in all lans such as the I-Series. Main reason being is that i find the gameplay to be a lot more enjoyable, you have to control the recoil and actually aim whereas on source i've found you can just spray, just my opinion but 1.6 > Source

I don't like 1.6 because I'm just not used to pub play on it. For instance on Source on Dust2, you can jump out of CT spawn and look up to T spawn at the snipers. On 1.6, I find that there's a low roof so the snipers can't be seen, but they can see me for some reason.

I do, however, prefer 1.6 for surfing.

ts would be higher up so they would really see your torso and below.

I regulary play both equal amout of time. But i like 1.6 more because its just more fun and it takes more skills. Also i play it because im just...better at it, plus CAL and CPL are still having 1.6

CSS is also alot of fun etc, i really like it. But when im serious about it i play 1.6

i love people call it "skill" in game. all you need to know is the glitches and how the game reacts.

Compared to source, 1.6 is very retarded, the graphics suck allot, the map design sucks, the animations suck, the sound sucks, the game play is beyond the definition of unrealistic... I was soooo sad that I traded my Silk Road account for a 1.6 account. CZ on the other hand is awesome and better than source and that other abomination, but ONLy for normal maps...

1.5 is still my favorate, as I cant stand riot shields and ultra cheap assault rifles in 1.6 or the mahoosive head hit boxes of CS:S.

Too bad I have to play on Eastern Euorpien servers.

grenades still only do an odd ten to fourty damage, when in real life they would totaly KERSPLODE you up. and the reason more people play cs? stupidity probably, or shit-house pc's.

Wtf are you on about?

All the official maps in Source match up nearly perfectly to the maps in 1.6.

Considering that Source is a up-to-date version of 1.6 the gameplay concept is the same.

I still never noticed the claimed '70% bigger headshot boxes' in CSS compared to 1.6, they're both as simple to hit.
