It's like this virtual reality cool thing. I want one, i could have little battles in my room (i know im sad, but i would never have to play an RTS again)

Follow Me!
It's pretty big so if your on 56k BEWARE! [ 11108KB ]

how do those things just appear though?! and what if you stick ur hand through it, will it just be nothing?!

Time to play Virtual Counterstrike methinks.

This could be the Generals best instrument of war, zoom down to the battlefield via geographical and spies saterllites and position troops as you see fit. Obviously, troops on the ground will also see part of this virtual battlefield and go to the appropriate coordinates that the generals have marked out as necessary.

can anyone give me a direct link cos it keep sbuffering every 5 seconds and its unwatchable ?

direct link = Downlaod

That's the revolution, isn't it?

Nope. That's a company called total immersion. It's a company which will sell it's software to other companies for better marketing (and as you can see..it works!)

I don't know how it works but what you are watching is on a monitor. The camera is pointing at a monitor, not at the actual person. Basically it's like the EYE TOY for PS2, except with a whole lot more interactive interface. (I second that...A HELL OF A LOT MORE!!)

Seems pretty dodgy to me. He holds his hand in the same position all the way through, meaning that I doubt he could juggle that flower without it going straight through his hand.

Right click on the video and go properties then copy the URL and open windows media player and "open from URL" option then paste the URL it will download then just "save as" and you have downloaded it.

Guys guys, calm down, what you see is the image on a MONITOR. You DON'T see it in real life.
Jesus, what you're thinking is completely impossible, without setting up like hundeds of projectors all over the place. The guy holding the projector thing can't see the flower (or whatever) You have to look at the screen.

The technology they are showing isn't virtual objects projected into real life.

Don't be stupid!

So here's how it works, you take a special ahh, "scanner" camera, and examine the area you want to work with. This creates a 3D model of the area in the computer. Once this is done you can just add whatever you want into that environment, but it ONLY SHOWS ON THE MONITOR. Just want to make that clear to you fools

I see nothing special in this video. If it WAS what you guys are thinking, we would be seeing it pop up EVERYWHERE worldwide. But it's just not a possible technology. Sorry :(

I can't remember where I read it (or saw it, can't even remember whether it was a video or an article) but eye-toy is gonna give you features like this in the future too with the next gen consoles.

lol, you gotta love the french, thats nifty, although its basically virtual reality with real life objects set up to clip stuff in the virtual world.

Yet.

Not to long ago people thought we had learned all there was to learn about physics.

Yeah, but its still cool, man. I mean, think about it.

My idea for this technology would be a virtual FPS game. A special headset could be created, with a camera mounted right infront of the eyes, and the camera feed was directed to the wearer's eyes. The person wearing the headset would see everything he would normally see EXCEPT it would add things like terrorists and stuff, placed right where they should be. Then it could add a gun to your hand, like the flower and lightsaber in the demo guy's hand.

Think about it. Add that technology with Source physics, and you could watch a virtual ragdoll body roll down your stairs in your house. Awh man, I want that now!

I'm not impressed. I've been making helicopters fly out of my kitchen table for years.

That would be f*cking sweet. Headcrabs in my house! Strider walking outside! uhhh... Alyx Vance on my bed

Havok powered boobies. Oh, the posibilities.

So basically, all this technology does is trace movements in realtime, and apply dynamic overlays of 3d renderings over the top.

Useful I guess, but I was doing the same years ago, and got bored of it quickly. It's far from new technology :/

CAVEs on the other hand, now they're cool.

You havent played Vampire: Bloodlines have you?

source powered, asses, boobs, etc.

now THAT is nerdy.:)

It would be cool if you pretended like you were in half life 2 and then they put it in later....which they already can do..

So it basicly scans the room and makes it into a map?

.... So we COULD give you a little headset and stick some metropolice in your kitchen? Right now? All that is needed is some money and some good programers?

I got an idea for a mod!

Yes, that FPS idea is indeed possible, and it would pwn the sky. :)

Hmm who revived this?

im going to cry. this is the most beautiful thing ive seen in my entire life.... i am stunned. so awesome

Such head set would only need lcd eyepieces and binocular cameras mounted parallel to you field of vision, thus giving you augmented vision that is in sync with where you are looking.

Very cool technology, but I would have liked it even better had he been able to manipulate the 3d models. Like swatting the helicopter out of the air, or picking up the hummer. Right now, the level of interactivity is fairly low.

Very easy to do such a thing.

The goggles..

-Have a mechanism detect what angle you are looking.
No problem.

-Have a set of sensors that can determine your location in 3D space.
Easy, think of it like a GPS, but with a 3rd dimension. No problem.

And so now you can determine where the user is, and what angle he is looking at.

That's basically all they need to do. I don't see how this isn't simple.

You need more info than where the user is and where he''s looking to allow him to hit a virtual object, such as where his hand is!

But yeah, the technology's already around so it's very doable. If you calibrated the 'game' to your hand, whatever (gave it precise dimensions) it'd just about be able to work out where your hand would be in the virtual world, hence give you interactivity.

Making it reliable, especially for extended periods would be very tough though, and hasn't been cracked yet (at least so an individual could buy and use a system as good as you're suggesting).

BTW, CAVEs do this already, just in an enclosed environment.
I've been in one and it looks very cool.
